The claim that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani sought a 20% salary increase for himself and other city officials in July 2026 has been rated as false.
While the City Council was considering an 18.2% raise for the mayor, City Council Speaker Julie Menin, all Council members, and several other city officials, this proposal stemmed from a June 2026 commission report recommending the increase. However, spokespeople for both Mayor Mamdani and Speaker Menin stated that neither of them would accept the raise, even if it was approved by the Council.
A spokesperson for Mayor Mamdani confirmed, “The mayor is committed to not taking a pay raise during his time in office.” Similarly, a representative for Speaker Menin indicated, “Speaker Julie Menin will not be accepting the proposed pay raise.”
The salary increase recommendation was made by a commission that published its findings in June 2026. The commission’s report suggested an 18.2% salary bump for various city officials, including the mayor, Council speaker and members, comptroller, borough presidents, and the district attorney. These positions had not seen a salary increase since 2016. A bill to implement these recommended raises was slated for introduction on July 16, 2026.
Despite the introduction of this bill, multiple news reports confirmed that Mayor Mamdani and Speaker Menin would decline any such raise. It remains unclear if other officials mentioned in the commission’s report would accept the increase.
