The claim gained momentum following reports of an impending City Council vote on raising the pay for various elected positions, including the mayor. Many social media posts highlight this as contradictory to Mamdani’s public stance on taxing the affluent.
The proposed pay increase originates from an independent compensation commission’s recommendations. This commission, established to review the salaries of city officials who have not seen a pay adjustment since 2016, proposed an 18.2% increase for the mayor, City Council members, borough presidents, the comptroller, and other elected officials. The legislation before the City Council reflects these recommendations.
However, Mamdani’s office has clarified that the mayor does not intend to accept any pay raise during his tenure. His spokesperson stated, "the mayor is committed to not taking a pay raise during his time in office." Similarly, the office of City Council Speaker Julie Menin indicated that she would also decline any salary increase if approved.
The social media narrative appears to confuse a commission-driven salary review with a personal initiative by Mayor Mamdani. There is no evidence to suggest that the mayor proposed, lobbied for, or requested this pay adjustment. The initiative stemmed from an independent body, and the subsequent legislation was introduced by a City Council member.
