Body of Missing Student James Gracey Found in Barcelona

The body of James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama student who had been reported missing in Barcelona, Spain, has been found by local authorities, bringing a tragic end to a search that gained international attention.

Gracey had traveled to Barcelona during spring break to visit friends who were studying abroad. He disappeared in the early hours of March 17 after a night out in the city’s popular beachside nightlife district. Spanish police later recovered his body from the Mediterranean Sea near Somorrostro Beach, close to the area where he was last seen.

Student Went Missing After Night Out

According to reports, Gracey was last seen around 3 a.m. outside the Shôko nightclub, a well-known venue located along Barcelona’s Port Olímpic waterfront. He had been out with friends earlier in the night but became separated from the group. When he failed to return to the apartment where he was staying, friends and family grew concerned and reported him missing.

Gracey’s mother also posted appeals for help on social media, asking anyone in Barcelona who might have seen her son to contact authorities. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as wearing a white T-shirt, dark pants, and a gold chain with a rhinestone cross.

Search Efforts Focused on the Waterfront

Police from Catalonia’s regional force launched a search operation soon after the missing person report was filed. The investigation focused heavily on the beach and port area near the nightclub, where Gracey was last seen.

The search intensified after authorities reportedly recovered personal items belonging to the student, including his wallet. Divers and maritime police units were then deployed to search nearby waters.

On March 19, search teams discovered a body in the water off Somorrostro Beach, located along the Mediterranean coast in Barcelona. Authorities later confirmed that the remains belonged to Gracey.

Authorities Believe Death May Be Accidental

Initial findings from investigators suggest that Gracey’s death may have been the result of an accident. Police said there are currently no clear signs of foul play, although the investigation is still ongoing and a formal autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

Security footage reportedly shows the student walking alone toward the docks shortly before he disappeared, which has led investigators to believe he may have accidentally fallen into the water.

Officials emphasized that final conclusions will depend on forensic examinations and further analysis of evidence.

Family and University Respond

Gracey was originally from Elmhurst, Illinois, and was a junior studying accounting at the University of Alabama. He was also involved in campus life as a member of the Theta Chi fraternity.

In a statement following the discovery of his body, his family expressed deep grief and asked for privacy as they cope with the loss.

They described him as a “deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend” whose death has left the family devastated.

The University of Alabama also released a statement offering condolences to Gracey’s family and acknowledging the impact of his death on the campus community.

Investigation Continues

While authorities currently believe the death was likely accidental, investigators are continuing to review security footage and witness accounts to fully understand what happened in the hours before Gracey disappeared.

Barcelona remains one of Europe’s most visited tourist destinations, attracting millions of visitors every year, particularly to its beaches and nightlife districts.

For Gracey’s family, friends, and university community, the focus now shifts from searching for answers to mourning the loss of a young student whose life ended far from home.
