The claim gained traction through a video of a Fox News broadcast featuring anchor John Roberts reading a post from President Trump’s Truth Social account. The post reportedly stated that the United States was “hereby terminating all discussions on trade with Canada, effective immediately.” Various versions of this claim have been shared across social media platforms, with one X post specifically mentioning the termination of talks due to Canada’s imposition of a Digital Services Tax on American tech companies.
However, an examination of the available information indicates that this claim is false. While there have been tense trade relations and the imposition of tariffs, President Trump did not announce an immediate end to all trade negotiations with Canada. Officials have consistently indicated ongoing trade discussions between the two nations.
Furthermore, the Fox News clip associated with the claim appears to be outdated and references a past disagreement from 2025 concerning a digital services tax, which has since been addressed. A search for the claim revealed that John Roberts was referencing a Truth Social post from President Trump dated June 27, 2025.
In that 2025 post, Trump expressed frustration with Canada’s trade practices, including high tariffs on American dairy products and the imposition of a Digital Services Tax on U.S. tech companies. He characterized this tax as a “direct and blatant attack on our Country” and stated that, based on this tax, the U.S. would be “terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately.” He also indicated that Canada would be informed of a retaliatory tariff within the following seven days.
Separately, on Monday, July 20, President Trump did indeed implement a 50% tariff on the majority of Canadian goods, asserting that Canada had unfairly discriminated against American products. This action carries the potential for further economic disruption, including increased inflation and strained relations between the two closely integrated economies.
