The claim that Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, wrote in his diary that President Donald Trump was not interested in the pandemic and was instead focused on preventing Joe Biden’s presidency is correct.
Fauci’s unredacted diary entries were released during a Senate committee hearing in late July 2026. Social media posts circulated a quote attributed to Fauci, stating: “POTUS [President of the United States] has no interest at all in the Pandemic. He is focusing on blocking Biden from being POTUS. He is embarrassing the USA. However, 72,000,000 voted for him. Difficult to understand. Craziness has overtaken part of our country.”
This quote was accurately attributed to Fauci and was found on page 476 of his publicly released diary, which contained entries from his time as a top infectious-disease official during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fauci himself confirmed the authenticity of the diary during the Senate hearing.
The diary entry in question was written on November 16, 2020, shortly after Joe Biden won the presidential election. The quote reflects a shift in Fauci’s observations of President Trump over the course of the pandemic, with earlier entries showing mutual respect, while later entries became more critical. For example, in October 2020, Fauci wrote that Trump was “really out of control” and “A true embarrassment.”
