Fact Check: Is it true New York City’s grocery stores will require shoppers to show ID?

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A plan introduced by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to establish five city-run supermarkets has triggered a wave of viral misinformation online. Conservative influencers, social media users, and Republican figures quickly amplified unverified claims that customers would be forced to present identification just to buy food.

The online uproar can be traced back to statements made during a media briefing detailing Zohran Mamdani’s municipal grocery initiative.

During the session, journalists questioned how the administration intended to stop individuals from purchasing large quantities of discounted goods solely to resell them for a profit.

In reply, New York City Economic Development Corporation interim president and CEO Jeanny Pak mentioned that officials were exploring a “library-card-esque” framework.

She clarified that the concept mirrors a standard supermarket rewards card designed to track inventory and curb the exploitation of lower prices. However, these comments were distorted on social media, leading to false assertions that government-issued ID would be mandatory for all grocery shoppers.

One user on X wrote, “New York City will require IDs to prove you live in the city in order to shop in the city owned grocery stores. So you need an ID to shop in the city’s stores, but it would be racist to require an ID to vote. Perfection.”

Fact Check: The claim is false

This rumor holds no truth. City representatives have confirmed that identification will not be requested at municipal grocery stores. Instead, authorities are looking into a completely optional customer rewards program akin to standard grocery loyalty cards.

The proposed card’s sole purpose is to monitor stock levels and prevent bulk-buying for resale, and it will not necessitate any form of identification.

Addressing the falsehood directly during an appearance on ‘The Joy Reid Show,‘ Mamdani stated, “When we’re talking about a city-run grocery store, one in each borough, which by the way, you do not need an ID to shop at, no matter what you’ve just heard in the news of today, we’re talking about actually addressing the question of skyrocketing grocery prices.”

Mamdani’s communications team, including Joe Calvello and Dora Pekec, also took to X to debunk the reports.

Calvello emphasized, “Insane that this even needs to be said, but to be absolutely clear: NYC Grocery stores will be open to everyone. There will be no system to verify identity, residency or income, and no one will be asked to show ID to shop. This is the dumbest and fakest online news cycle I have seen.”

Further clarifying the policy, spokesperson Cassio Mendoza reiterated that the discussed “library card” approach is merely a voluntary loyalty initiative intended to safeguard inventory against commercial resale abuse. The card will be available to all patrons without requiring IDs, income verification, or proof of residency.
