JSO Releases Details and Video From Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting Outside Bowden Road Gas Station

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released new details and surveillance video from a deadly officer-involved shooting that occurred outside a gas station on Bowden Road last month.

Officials said the incident happened on March 17 outside a Gate gas station near Interstate 95 in Jacksonville, Florida, where officers responded to a report of an armed man inside the convenience store.

The encounter ended when an officer opened fire, killing the suspect. Authorities confirmed that no officers were injured during the incident.

Suspect Identified as 49-Year-Old Michael Krause Jr.

According to investigators, the man involved in the incident was 49-year-old Michael Krause Jr.

Surveillance footage released by police shows Krause entering the gas station shortly after 9:15 a.m. while customers and employees were inside.

Police said that several minutes later he pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at a store clerk, prompting people inside the store to flee.

Investigators reported that Krause asked the clerk to call police and indicated that he wanted officers to kill him.

Officers Confront Suspect Outside the Store

Authorities said employees called 911, and officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrived at the gas station around 9:29 a.m.

According to police, Krause warned that he planned to come outside shooting. Moments later he exited the store and moved toward an officer while pointing the weapon.

Officer H. Cascante took a tactical position behind a patrol vehicle and fired his rifle when the suspect approached with the gun pointed in his direction.

Krause was struck by gunfire and died at the scene.

Weapon Later Determined to Be Airsoft Replica

Investigators later discovered that the gun Krause carried during the confrontation was a replica Glock 19 airsoft pistol, not a real firearm.

Officials said Krause never fired the weapon during the encounter.

Authorities believe the suspect may have been attempting “suicide by cop,” a situation where someone intentionally provokes officers to use deadly force.

Investigation and Policy Review Underway

The shooting remains under investigation.

Officials said the State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review of the case, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.

After that review, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will complete its own internal investigation to determine whether the officer’s actions complied with department policy.

Authorities noted that the officer involved had been hired in July 2020 and this was his first officer-involved shooting.
