FACT CHECK: Is Rob Sand a billionaire? Will he raise taxes?

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) — The race for Iowa Governor has heated up with a new campaign advertisement from Republican challenger Zach Lahn targeting Democrat Rob Sand. The spot attempts to portray Sand as an out-of-touch billionaire who favors higher taxes, but a fact-check reveals that these assertions do not hold up under scrutiny.

The ad centers heavily on the issue of cost of living, featuring the specific claim: “Rob Sand wants to raise your taxes by $7,500 a year. You can look it up.”

To justify this figure, the Lahn campaign referenced two sources: a previous news report where Sand expressed concern that Iowa’s 2024 income tax cuts would eventually strain the state budget, and a social media post where Sand criticized federal tax legislation.

However, the math does not support Lahn’s claim. According to data from Common Sense Iowa, the state tax cuts resulted in maximum savings of $1,300. Additionally, the nonpartisan Tax Foundation estimated that the average Iowan saved roughly $3,100 under the federal tax package. Combined, those figures fall far short of the $7,500 increase cited in the ad. Furthermore, financial analysts note that critiquing tax cuts is fundamentally different from actively proposing tax hikes.

Another claim in the ad—that Sand is a billionaire—has sparked considerable online debate.

According to official ethics disclosures, Sand’s sole source of income is his $103,000 annual salary as State Auditor. This discrepancy led critics to wonder if the Lahn campaign may have mistaken the Iowa official for Robert Sands, a billionaire businessman based in New York.

The Lahn campaign, however, clarified that the label is based on Sand’s marriage to Christine Lauridsen. Lauridsen serves as CEO of the Lauridsen Group, a family-owned health and nutrition enterprise that generates hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue.

While the family is undeniably affluent—having contributed millions to philanthropic causes and Sand’s past political campaigns—the private nature of the company makes its exact valuation difficult to determine. Lahn’s campaign arrived at the “billionaire” estimate by applying standard industry valuations to the private firm, arguing that marrying into the Lauridsen family fortune effectively makes Sand a billionaire by association.
