Fact Check: Did Trump slam 9/11 memorial because he wasn’t allowed to speak at the ceremony?

The viral image emerged following reports that Donald Trump will likely not be present at the upcoming commemoration

WASHINGTON, DC: As the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks approaches, a fabricated claim has spread across social media. The post alleges that Donald Trump lashed out at the 9/11 memorial on the internet after reportedly being denied a speaking slot at the anniversary ceremony, prompting widespread backlash and requests for verification.

The Allegation: A Harsh Attack on the 9/11 Memorial

While numerous users criticized the former president over the purported message, others questioned its legitimacy (@ShawS983/X)

The rumor initially spread through a screenshot purporting to display a message published directly from the president’s verified Truth Social account.

The fraudulent text read: “The National September 11 Memorial and Museum commission decided I’m not allowed to speak at the remembrance. Imagine that? A native New Yorker.”

“The greatest president in history. We’re looking into shutting them down permanently, remove the memorial and building a statue of me as tall as the World Trade Center.”

“Not to brag or anything, but I single-handedly saved 500 thousand people in those burning buildings. I ran 110 floors at least 50 times within 30 minutes, pulling people out of tight spaces. I almost died. DJT”

While a large segment of online users reacted angrily to the statements, a more cautious group doubted that the text was genuine.

Fact-Checking the Claim: No Such Statement Exists

Thorough investigation confirms that the circulating screenshot is completely fabricated. Trump never published any such critique of the 9/11 memorial through any of his verified social media channels.

A comprehensive review of his Truth Social profile, alongside secondary platforms like X and Facebook, revealed zero matches for the phrasing seen in the viral image.

Furthermore, standard web searches found no mainstream news coverage indicating that such a post had ever been published and subsequently deleted—an event that would certainly have drawn major media attention. Consequently, the claim is classified as entirely false and likely intended as political satire.

Context Behind the Speaker Policy at the 9/11 Ceremony

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 11: Family and friends of victims of the 9/11 terror attack look at the names of the victims on the South Tower reflecting pool during the annual 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony at the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum on September 11, 2025 in New York City...

The fake screenshot emerged amidst news that Trump is not slated to join the primary New York City memorial event at Ground Zero this year. Instead, plans indicate he will mark the 25th anniversary of the attacks at the Pentagon.

Although an interest in speaking at the New York commemoration was expressed, the request could not be accommodated. Elected officials have faced a strict ban on delivering remarks at the Ground Zero ceremony since 2012.

According to guidelines established by the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, this rule ensures the observance remains strictly nonpartisan, focusing solely on the families mourning their lost loved ones.
