Social media users </span><a href="https://www.instagram.com/reels/DdZrDATt1rr/"><span>asserted</span></a><span> (</span><a href="https://perma.cc/K5G4-XGH6"><span>archived</span></a><span>) that the image depicted U.S. President Donald Trump looking at a large, illustrated placard detailing the teardown of the prominent Washington, D.C. landmark. </span></p>

One photo distributed by Getty Images on Sept. 16 captured Trump viewing a placard featuring partial lettering at the top that spelled out "</span><a href="https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/president-donald-trump-is-seen-aboard-air-force-one-news-photo/2295121247?adppopup=true"><span>dy Center DEMOLISH</span></a><span>." A separate image showed the beginning of the text reading "</span><a href="https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/president-donald-trump-is-seen-aboard-air-force-one-news-photo/2295088970?adppopup=true"><span>Kennedy</span></a><span>." Both Getty Images and AFP are widely recognized as credible and reliable photographic archives. </span></p>

<p dir="ltr"><span>Consequently, claims that Trump was seen inspecting a document related to the demolition of the Kennedy Center have been rated as true.</span></p>

<p dir="ltr"><span>We have reached out to the White House Press Office to inquire about the exact contents of the printout and to check whether the administration holds any plans to tear down the arts center, and we are awaiting a response.</span></p>

<h2>Photos Emerge Amid Controversy Over Kennedy Center's Name</h2>

<p dir="ltr"><span>According to </span><a href="https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/president-donald-trump-is-seen-aboard-air-force-one-news-photo/2295121247?adppopup=true"><span>Getty Images</span></a><span>, Smialowski captured the shots of Trump looking at the "Kennedy Center" printout through the window of Air Force One following his arrival at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Sept. 16. </span></p>

<p dir="ltr"><span>Earlier that same day, C-SPAN broadcasted </span><a href="https://www.c-span.org/program/white-house-event/president-trump-speaks-to-reporters-before-rally-in-north-carolina/685306"><span>footage</span></a><span> of Trump addressing reporters in North Carolina, where he argued that his administration deserved credit for financially supporting and repairing the Kennedy Center, which he asserted had accumulated "hundreds of millions of dollars" in losses prior to his intervention.</span></p>

<p dir="ltr"><span>The president remarked (at timestamp 06:01): "I think that the Trump administration should certainly have recognition because frankly if we don't do that it's going to close, it'll end up being ripped down." His comments likely pertained to fundraising efforts for the building's overhaul.</span></p>

<p dir="ltr"><span>One day prior, on Sept. 15, a federal judge </span><a href="https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/72069932/77/beatty-v-trump/"><span>issued an order</span></a><span> stating that the </span><a href="https://www.kennedy-center.org/about-us/leadership/trustees/"><span>Kennedy Center Board of Trustees</span></a><span>—led by Trump—was prohibited from installing "memorials for President Trump or anyone or anything else at the Kennedy Center without Congress's blessing." Judge Christopher R. Cooper issued this directive as part of a </span><a href="https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/72493354/beatty-v-trump/"><span>legal challenge</span></a><span> filed in December 2025 by U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty, a Democratic representative from Ohio, aiming to prevent the venue from being renamed after Trump.</span></p>

Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts" or the "Trump Kennedy Center." Judge Cooper halted this modification in May 2026 and </span><a href="https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/72069932/49/beatty-v-trump/"><span>mandated</span></a><span> that all references to Trump's name be removed from public view. The facility appeared to comply with the ruling in June 2026 by erecting scaffolding to conceal Trump's name on the exterior facade.</span></p>

<h2>Court Mandates 30-Day Advance Notice for Demolition Plans</h2>

<p dir="ltr">At the time of publication, it remained unclear whether the "Kennedy Center DEMOLISH" placard observed by Trump on Sept. 16 directly connected to his statements regarding the building being "ripped down" without proper credit to his administration, or if it accurately reflected official administrative goals.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Judicial filings from a separate <a href="https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/72528661/1/dc-preservation-league-v-board-of-trustees-of-the-john-f-kennedy-center/">lawsuit</a> targeting the board—which aimed to halt any "demolition, new construction, major reconstruction, major renovation, or major aesthetic transformation" without congressional authorization—reveal that board attorneys <a href="https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/72528661/62/dc-preservation-league-v-board-of-trustees-of-the-john-f-kennedy-center/">stated</a> in August 2026 that "the building will not be demolished and that no new structure will be constructed."</p>

<p dir="ltr">Legal representatives for the board previously committed to notifying plaintiffs and the court should that stance shift. </p>

<p dir="ltr">Following the release of Smialowski's photographs, Cooper <a href="https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/72069932/beatty-v-trump/#minute-entry-478383984">directed</a> the defendants in the Beatty lawsuit, which encompasses Trump and the board, to provide "more than 30 days notice" in the event that plans changed regarding the building's demolition or new construction.</p>
