A viral screenshot on social media falsely claimed that Donald Trump made a bizarre remark about the Chinese president’s name during a Washington summit.
WASHINGTON, DC: Amid Chinese President Xi Jinping’s diplomatic visit to the White House, a widely circulated social media post alleged that Donald Trump had publicly poked fun at the Chinese leader’s name. The viral claim quickly drew backlash and amusement online, prompting a closer look at its authenticity.
Claim: Donald Trump mocked Xi Jinping’s name
The rumor gained traction through a graphic purporting to be a screenshot from Trump’s official Truth Social account.
According to the fake screenshot, the message began with standard praise: “I was deeply honored to meet and greet my very good friend, President Xi of China-a brilliant guy, very strong, rules over 1.4 billion people with an iron fist, everybody knows it!”
The fabricated text continued: “We were sitting in a fantastic, high-level meeting—top experts, great diplomats, very impressive room—and I looked at him and said, ‘Mr. President, you’re a great leader, but you are spelling your name completely WRONG! It shouldn’t be X-I. It needs to be S-H-I!'”
The post went on to claim, “And you know what? President Shi AGREED with me! He looked at me, he smiled, and he totally understood! He said, ‘Donald, you are so right, nobody has ever pointed that out to me before!'”
It concluded with the fictional quote, “Because every time people say ‘She is coming,’ they don’t know if it is a woman or the President of China. Very confusing, highly complicated! This had never occurred to anyone! Not to the top scholars, not to the folks in the State Department—nobody! But I brought it up to him, we fixed it right on the spot, and now we have a tremendous, high-IQ understanding! A beautiful thing!”
Fact Check: The post is entirely fake
In reality, the circulating image is a complete fabrication. No such statement exists anywhere on Trump’s official social media feeds.
A review of his Truth Social profile, along with archives maintained by digital monitors on platforms like X, confirmed that no such remarks were ever published.
Furthermore, several distinct indicators exposed the image as a joke, including a visible watermark reading ‘Mrs Putin Satire.’
In addition, the username displayed in the screenshot does not match Trump’s actual handle on the platform.
While Trump did offer cordial remarks regarding Xi Jinping and their diplomatic relationship during Thursday’s White House meetings, he made no comments whatsoever regarding the spelling or pronunciation of the Chinese leader’s name.
