In late September 2026, social media went abuzz with a rumor suggesting that Nolan’s next major project—following the massive box office triumph of his summer epic The Odyssey—would be a film titled Star Wars: Darth Vader.
For instance, on September 23, an X (formerly Twitter) user posted in Turkish, translating to: “Christopher Nolan, the director of the new Star Wars trilogy titled STAR WARS: DARTH VADER!” The post quickly racked up millions of views. A parallel post on Instagram similarly declared, “Christopher Nolan Set to Direct Standalone Darth Vader Film.” Variations of the rumor rapidly spread across Instagram, TikTok, and X.
However, investigations revealed that the story is entirely fabricated. While internet chatter and hopeful fan wishes regarding Nolan directing a Star Wars project have floated around for years, the specific rumor originated from an account explicitly labeled as a parody and satire source.
The viral post came from the X account @ChaosCrave_, which presented the fake news with this description:
“George Lucas is reportedly lobbying for Christopher Nolan to direct a standalone STAR WARS: DARTH VADER film. Hayden Christensen is reportedly attached to lead the project, marking his return to the suit for an R-rated, dark-fantasy exploration of the Sith Lord’s peak Imperial era.”
Accompanying the post were photos of Lucas, Nolan behind an IMAX camera, Christensen, and the classic Star Wars logo.
The person behind @ChaosCrave_ later confirmed the hoax in a direct message, admitting, “Yes, I made it up completely by myself.”
Just days before the rumor took off online, Hayden Christensen himself addressed general, unrelated speculation about returning as Darth Vader. During a red-carpet interview with E! News on September 19 at the opening of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, a reporter asked if there was any truth to solo Vader film rumors.
“Oh, I think those are just rumors,” Christensen replied. When asked if he would be open to the idea should it ever happen, he added, “Of course, yeah. I would be thrilled to get to do that, but right now those are just rumors.”
