The post asserted that Mayor Zohran Mamdani had declared the city would pay October’s rent for anyone impacted by the deluge.
The assertion immediately generated heavy online discussion, with a widely shared post on X claiming the mayor had stepped in to alleviate the financial burden of the disaster. The traction it gained ultimately necessitated a formal fact-check as users debated its legitimacy.
The Claim: Did Zohran Mamdani promise October rent relief for flood victims?
According to the viral social media post, Mayor Mamdani allegedly stated, “After what this city is going through, nobody should have to worry about rent,” promising full coverage for October.
The post accumulated tens of thousands of views within a short timeframe, receiving a mixed reception. While some users commended the supposed initiative, others remained doubtful, prompting a deeper look into the rumor’s validity.
Reality Check: The viral post stems from a satire account
A review of public records and communications shows no truth to the rumor. Although Mamdani did advise residents to exercise caution and remain indoors during the severe weather, he never made any agreement, announcement, or press release regarding rent assistance.
An announcement of this magnitude would undoubtedly be covered extensively by major media outlets. However, a thorough search across Google and other news databases turned up zero credible reports supporting the claim.
Instead, the misinformation originated from an X profile named ‘Hoops Crave,’ which explicitly states in its biography section that it is dedicated to ‘parody and satire.’

“While this storm is expected to pass offshore and keep the heaviest rain east of New York City, New Yorkers should still prepare for gusty winds, rain and coastal flooding this weekend,” Mayor Mamdani stated officially.
“If you live near the coast, move your car to higher ground or away from streets that regularly flood, and secure anything outside that could be picked up by strong winds. Storm tracks can change, so stay informed and take the simple steps that can keep you and your neighbors safe.”
Echoing these safety precautions, NYCEM Commissioner Christina Farrell added, “We’re keeping a close eye on the Friday evening and Saturday morning high tides, which could bring flooding to low-lying areas on Staten Island’s eastern shore, in the Rockaways and around Jamaica Bay.”
