What’s True

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District in Costa Mesa, California, confirmed it placed an unnamed teacher on administrative leave. This action followed a video where she stated the American flag made her “uncomfortable” and jokingly suggested a student pledge allegiance to a classroom pride flag instead. However…

What’s False

The footage was actually filmed in 2021, a detail left out of viral 2026 posts framing the event as breaking news. Furthermore, no proof exists that the Back Bay High School English teacher “forced” anyone to pledge to the pride flag, and memes sharing this narrative utilized fake, AI-generated images.

What’s Undetermined

At the time, district officials stated the teacher was removed from the classroom pending an ongoing investigation and due process. The district never publicly confirmed her name or whether she resigned voluntarily or was officially terminated, and users spreading the firing rumor have provided no documentation to substantiate it.

Social media platforms saw a surge in rumors during September 2026 alleging that a California school district terminated a teacher for compelling students to direct their Pledge of Allegiance toward an LGBTQ+ pride banner.

A prominent example appeared on Facebook on Sept. 29, featuring a meme with three smiling photos of a woman wearing rainbow attire against a backdrop of pride flags. The caption questioned whether she deserved termination for allegedly forcing students to salute the pride flag.

The same narrative had been shared by the identical account in late August 2026, falsely labeled as “BREAKING” alongside different imagery. Variants of this meme quickly spread across Instagram, X, and other networks.

An examination of these claims reveals a combination of factual events, missing context, speculation, and manipulated media.

Back in 2021, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District in Costa Mesa, California, did place a teacher on leave after she uploaded a video expressing discomfort with the American flag and telling a student they could pledge to the pride flag on her wall.

However, resetting the timeline to 2026 stripped away vital context. Reports from 2021 identified the instructor as Kristen Pitzen of Back Bay High School, though accounts uniformly lacked evidence that she ever “forced” students to perform the pledge. Moreover, the portraits circulating in the 2026 memes were fabricated using artificial intelligence.

District representatives initially stated that the educator was no longer teaching while investigations proceeded, deliberately withholding whether she quit or was fired. Current claims regarding her termination remain entirely unsupported by evidence.

The Background

The controversy began on Aug. 27, 2021, when Pitzen—then listed as an English teacher at Back Bay High School—posted a TikTok video explaining that she had removed her classroom’s U.S. flag during the COVID-19 pandemic because it made her uneasy, admitting she had misplaced it.

In the recording, she laughed as she recounted a student noting the oddity of reciting the pledge to an empty wall, leading her to point out the pride flag as an alternative. Her tone throughout the clip suggested the remark was intended as a joke, and no students appeared on camera.

The video quickly drew widespread outrage online, with users on X demanding her dismissal and circulating her alleged TikTok handle, @mrsgillingsworth. Although independent verification of the exact account origin remains difficult, the transcript of her remarks went viral:

Ok, so during third period, we have announcements and they do the Pledge of Allegiance. I always tell my class, “Stand if you feel like it. Don’t stand if you feel like it. Say the words if you want. [You] don’t have to say the words.” So, my class decided to stand but not say the words. Totally fine.

Except for the fact that my room does not have a flag. It used to be there but I took it down during COVID because it made me uncomfortable. And I packed it away and I don’t know where and I haven’t found it yet. But my kid today goes, “Hey, it’s kind of weird that we just stand and then, you know, we say it to nothing.” And I’m like, “Oh, well, you know I’ve gotta find it. Like I’m working on it. I got you.”

In the meantime, I tell this kid, “We do have a flag in the class that you can pledge your allegiance to.” And he like looks around and he goes, “Oh, that one?”

Responding to the digital backlash, the school district issued a statement on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021, announcing that an anonymous teacher had been placed on administrative leave due to concerns surrounding the American flag.

By Monday, Aug. 30, the district issued a follow-up statement published by outlets like the Los Angeles Times:

We are aware that one of our teachers posted a video on her personal social media that caused alarm and concern related to saluting the American flag. We assure you that we take matters like this seriously. Showing respect for our nation’s flag is an important value that we instill in our students and an expectation of our employees. The teacher is no longer in the classroom. We follow due process and our investigation continues.

District spokesperson Annette Franco later confirmed that the teacher was no longer employed by the district, though she declined to clarify whether it was a resignation or a firing. School policies at the time explicitly noted that students and staff could opt out of patriotic exercises for personal reasons.
