A viral post on X falsely claimed that European officials were furious over Donald Trump hosting Vladimir Putin at an upcoming Miami summit.
WASHINGTON, DC: Amid ongoing backlash regarding the invitation extended to Russian President Vladimir Putin for the upcoming G20 Summit in Miami, a fabricated rumor began spreading across social media. The post alleged that European leaders possessed intelligence proving that President Donald Trump is being blackmailed by Putin.
This assertion quickly triggered widespread online debate, with some users expressing deep concern over the supposed intelligence, while others immediately questioned its authenticity and demanded proof.
The Rumor: Allegations of Putin Blackmailing Trump

The viral narrative stemmed from a post on X, which alleged: “European leaders are reportedly pissed that Donald Trump is hosting the next G20 meeting at his own property so their countries have to pay him personally, and more pissed that he invited Putin because they all have intelligence proof he’s being blackmailed by Putin.”
While various accounts amplified the rumor—some treating it as factual news—others urged caution and called for independent verification.
Fact Check: The Origin Was Pure Satire

Although Trump’s decision to invite Putin to the G20 Summit has genuinely sparked real-world political controversy, there is zero factual basis to the claim that European officials hold an intelligence dossier indicating Trump is being blackmailed by Putin.
No official statements, press releases, or communications from European governments or international organizations have ever mentioned any such intelligence report.
Had such a monumental diplomatic revelation occurred, major global news organizations would have immediately made it front-page news. However, comprehensive searches across search engines like Google and Bing return no credible reports backing up the claim.
Instead, the narrative can be traced directly back to an X account named ‘The Halfway Post,’ which explicitly labels its content as satire in its profile biography.
Bipartisan Lawmakers Actually Objected to the Putin Invitation

The satirical post gained traction against the backdrop of genuine political friction. A coalition of both Republican and Democratic lawmakers recently sent a formal letter to President Trump, strongly urging him to rescind Putin’s invitation to the Miami G20 Summit. The legislators argued that hosting Putin would serve to legitimize Moscow’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
This bipartisan push was led by Senator Roger Wicker, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, alongside Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
They were joined by several Republican colleagues, including Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn, Jerry Moran, Alan Armstrong, Thom Tillis, and John Curtis.
“President Putin bears sole responsibility for launching Russia’s full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine,” the lawmakers stated in their letter to Trump.
“Allowing him to participate in a G20 Summit in the United States raises serious concerns about legitimizing and normalizing a government that continues to attack Ukrainian civilian targets every day.”
