Fact Check: Did Chuck Schumer say ‘our goal is to give citizenship to immigrants’?

The rumor gained traction shortly after Schumer announced his intention to run for another term as Senate Democratic leader.

WASHINGTON, DC: As the November midterm elections approach—with Democrats currently projected to win—social media has been flooded with claims that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) stated his primary objective is to grant U.S. citizenship to immigrants. This assertion has sparked widespread debate and criticism, leading to a closer look at the facts.

The allegation has circulated widely across multiple social media platforms, pulling in hundreds of thousands of views (@LeadingReport/X)

With midterm voting just weeks away, online rumors began suggesting that Schumer declared it his “ultimate goal” to legalize millions of migrants who crossed the border into the United States.

One viral post on X claimed, “Sen. Chuck Schumer: ‘Our ultimate goal’ is to give every illegal alien citizenship.”

Meanwhile, a widely shared Facebook post argued, “BREAKING: Sen. Chuck Schumer: ‘Our ultimate goal’ is to give every illegal alien citizenship. We knew this was their strategy and why they wanted open borders! Remember this when you vote!”

As these posts accumulated hundreds of thousands of views, public reactions sharply divided. While critics used the remarks to attack the Democratic platform, others questioned the context and called for verification.

The Reality: The Quote Dates Back to 2022

Technically, the core of the quote is accurate: Schumer did indeed state that a goal is to provide a pathway to citizenship for immigrants.

However, the statement is not recent. It was actually delivered in November 2022 during a congressional push urging the Senate to pass legislative protections for “Dreamers.”

“Dreamers” refers to participants of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, a federal initiative shielding certain individuals brought to the U.S. as children from deportation while granting them renewable work authorization.

During that 2022 address, Schumer remarked, “Now more than ever, we’re short of workers. We have a population that is not reproducing on its own at the same level that it used to.”

He added, “The only way we’re going to have a great future in America is if we welcome and embrace immigrants, the ‘Dreamers’ and all of them, because our ultimate goal is to help the ‘Dreamers’ but get a path to citizenship for all 11 million, or however many, undocumented there are here.”

The resurfacing of these older remarks coincides with Schumer’s recent announcement that he plans to seek another term as the Senate Democratic leader following the midterms, despite facing pushback from a couple of Democratic nominees.

In an interview discussing his leadership plans with Politico, Schumer firmly stated, “I am running for reelection for leader. Period.”
