Fact Check: Did Bernie Sanders slam socialism and claim he owns three houses and two boats?

Social media users recently amplified a fabricated post alleging that Senator Bernie Sanders was overheard criticizing his supporters and dismissing socialism.

WASHINGTON, DC: A viral rumor has been making the rounds online, falsely asserting that independent Senator Bernie Sanders turned on his own political ideology and labeled communists as easily gullible.

The fabricated story quickly gained traction, leaving many online users questioning its authenticity and driving the need for a thorough investigation.

The Rumor: Fabricated Hot-Mic Comments

According to the widely shared post on X, Sanders was purportedly captured on a hot mic over the weekend sharing his genuine disdain for the socialist policies he typically champions.

The fake quote claimed the senator told an aide, “These people don’t understand what it means. I have three houses and two boats. And they think I’m really one of them?”

Furthermore, the post alleged that Sanders attacked his own political base, branding communists as the nation’s “most easily manipulated people” who will blindly support anything promised for free.

While tens of thousands viewed the post—with some taking the claims at face value—others immediately expressed doubt and called for verification.

Fact Check: The Statement is Entirely False

There is zero truth to the rumor. Sanders never made any such remarks renouncing his political platform or attacking communists.

A review of public records, official press releases, recent interviews, and Sanders’ verified social media accounts reveals no evidence of these statements (though he has previously acknowledged owning multiple properties).

Had a prominent lawmaker made such disparaging remarks about their own supporters, it would have immediately dominated national news. However, comprehensive searches across major search engines yielded no credible reports supporting the claim.

Additionally, the post originated from a low-credibility social media account known for sharing unverified and misleading content primarily designed to boost online engagement.

The emergence of this hoax follows Sanders’ renewed legislative push earlier this year for a federal wealth tax, aimed at funding critical social programs for working-class families by taxing top earners.

Reinforcing his long-standing platform online, Sanders recently posted, “THE BILLIONAIRES MUST PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE OF TAXES. While the very rich are getting richer, working families are struggling to afford health care, housing, groceries and other basic necessities. In the midst of unprecedented income and wealth inequality, the billionaire class must start paying their fair share of taxes.”
