Fact Check: Did Ilhan Omar flee to Morocco after federal agents raided her home?

Social media rumors allege that Representative Ilhan Omar escaped to Morocco, a nation lacking a bilateral extradition agreement with the United States.

WASHINGTON, DC: In the wake of a federal search conducted at the Washington, DC residence of Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar, unverified reports began spreading online suggesting the Democratic lawmaker had traveled to Morocco to avoid authorities. The rumor quickly gained traction, prompting widespread online discussion and requests for verification.

Rumor: Ilhan Omar Departs the US for Morocco

A social media post pushing the rumor accumulated over 600,000 views (@RealRawNews1/X)

Following the federal law enforcement activity at the congresswoman’s home—reportedly tied to an ongoing criminal inquiry—posts surfaced asserting that Omar had slipped away to Morocco, emphasizing that the North African country does not share an extradition treaty with America.

One widely shared post on X (formerly Twitter) claimed, “We’re hearing [sic] more reports that Ilhan Omar fled her home 30 minutes before the raid and has gone underground, hiding, fearing arrest. Working on two or three [sic] articles right now but will have this report out asap.”

Another user asserted, “We’re hearing from sources at the State Department that Ilhan Omar has fled the United States for Morocco, which does not have a bilateral extradition treaty with the US.”

While the claims drew hundreds of thousands of views and convinced some users, many others expressed skepticism regarding their validity.

Fact Check: Zero Credibility to the Claims

Ultimately, these assertions are entirely false. There is no factual basis indicating that the Minnesota representative left the country or relocated to Morocco following the raid on her property.

The U.S. State Department has released no statements, notices, or briefings confirming any such departure.

Had a sitting member of Congress actually fled the country to evade law enforcement, it would constitute major international news. However, independent searches across Google, Bing, and major news networks show no legitimate coverage of such an event.

Furthermore, Omar herself has remained active on her official social media channels, publicly addressing the investigation and signaling her intent to contest the allegations, directly contradicting the narrative that she went into hiding abroad.

In response to the law enforcement action, an official statement released via Omar’s congressional website denounced the operation as “an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies.”

Later that day, Omar addressed the public directly on X, writing: “I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.”
