Fact Check: Did Putin call Trump a ‘patriot’ and say it’s a ‘golden age’ for Russia?

The rumor gained traction online in the wake of widespread criticism over a newly brokered U.S. agreement to purchase Russian diesel.

WASHINGTON, DC: Following a controversial fuel deal between the United States and Russia, social media users began sharing a fabricated story claiming Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Donald Trump. The viral posts alleged that Putin labeled Trump a “patriot” and declared the current era a “golden age for Russia,” triggering widespread online debate and a swift fact-check.

The narrative initially surfaced on Facebook, accompanied by an image of Putin layered over a manipulated Fox News broadcast template to give the illusion of legitimate news reporting.

According to the circulated text, the Russian leader purportedly stated: “This is the golden age of Russia. We have two very hardworking patriotic presidents. One in Moscow. One in Washington, D.C.”

The post quickly migrated to platforms like X, Instagram, and Threads, racking up tens of thousands of views. While some social media users expressed alarm over an apparent warming of ties between the two superpowers, others welcomed the supposed sentiment. Online reactions varied from genuine belief to outright skepticism regarding the post’s validity.

Fact Check: A Satirical Fabrication

In reality, the claim is entirely false. There are no official records, statements, or social media broadcasts from the Russian government indicating that Putin ever called Trump a patriot or referred to a “golden age.”

Had a world leader made such remarks, major international news agencies would have immediately picked up the story. However, comprehensive searches—including archives of Fox News—yielded no such reports.

Furthermore, closer inspection of the viral graphic reveals clear markers of satire and fabrication. The image features a “Mrs. Putin Satire” watermark, misspells Fox News as “Fox Mews,” and refers to Putin humorously as “Voldemort Pukein, Prussian President.”

The circulation of the fake quote coincided with heightened geopolitical tensions following the U.S.–Russia diesel agreement. The deal drew sharp rebukes from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, prompting a harsh response from Trump, who publicly called for new leadership in Ukraine.

“I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal because he could have made many deals and for some reason he never does,” Trump remarked.

He added, “Zelenskyy could have settled this war many times, many, many times, and he chooses not to. Very difficult. It’s a war that should have never been started. If I were present, if the election weren’t rigged, I would have been president and that war would have never started.”
