Fact Check: Did Brad Pitt say he doesn’t care about his children dropping his surname?

Following years of family tension and a prolonged legal battle after their 2016 split, several of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s children have chosen to go by the Jolie surname exclusively.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: A viral social media post recently claimed that Brad Pitt expressed indifference over his children dropping his last name. As this claim gains traction online, it raises the question: Did Pitt actually make these remarks? Let’s look at the facts.

Claim: Brad Pitt stated he doesn’t care about his children dropping his surname

The rumor appears to have started on X (formerly Twitter), where a user attributed a harsh quote to Brad Pitt regarding the name changes. The text was superimposed over an entirely unrelated, older video of the actor discussing his work ethic and need for solitude.

Pitt and Angelina Jolie share six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne. After separating in 2016, the couple finalized their divorce in December 2024 following extensive custody disputes and legal disagreements.

Several of the children have since moved to legally or publicly drop Pitt’s surname. Shiloh dropped the “Pitt” portion of her name shortly after turning 18 in 2024. Meanwhile, petitions for Maddox and Zahara were reportedly approved in September 2026—though Zahara had already been using the Jolie surname publicly for years—and Vivienne filed a similar petition later that year.

This online rumor circulated amid renewed media attention surrounding the family’s fractured relationships. Reports indicated that some of the children had changed their phone numbers, making direct communication difficult for Pitt. However, sources close to the actor have noted that despite feeling that the name changes were a significant blow, Pitt remains hopeful about eventually repairing his relationships with his kids.

Fact Check: False

The viral claim is entirely false. Brad Pitt never made these statements. No credible news outlet, verified public statement, or legitimate interview contains these or similar dismissive remarks.

The account responsible for the post frequently shares satirical and gossip-based content. This isn’t the first fabricated quote to surface in 2026; an earlier rumor claimed Pitt would simply “adopt another child,” which was also presented as satire masquerading as news.

Furthermore, the video paired with the tweet originates from an unrelated interview where Pitt speaks about his intensity toward creative projects and the difference between solitude and loneliness. He makes zero mention of his children or their surnames in the footage.

Community Notes on X quickly flagged the post as fabricated, pointing out the mismatch between the video and the caption. Independent checks yielded the exact same result: searches for distinct phrases from the fake quote—such as “brainwashed by their mom” and “I’ll make more children with my girlfriend”—lead back solely to the satirical tweet or unrelated content.

In reality, while reports suggest Pitt has been deeply hurt by the family rift, there is no evidence to support the idea that he has publicly lashed out at his children or dismissed their choices as “their loss.”
