Fact Check: Did Trump ask Sundar Pichai to change his name to Sundar Trump?

The rumor emerged following a conversation between Trump and Pichai regarding the potential renaming of the Atlantic Ocean.

WASHINGTON, DC: A viral social media rumor recently claimed that President Donald Trump contacted Google CEO Sundar Pichai to request that he legally change his surname to “Sundar Trump.” The bizarre report triggered widespread online amusement, doubt, and calls for verification.

Claim: Donald Trump requested Sundar Pichai to adopt the last name ‘Trump’

The viral post sparked mixed reactions across social media platforms (@DailyNoud/X)

The story began with a post on X asserting that Trump personally called Pichai to demand the name change, to which the tech executive allegedly replied, “No, I’m not doing that.”

While some social media users took the post literally and criticized the president, many others expressed skepticism, questioning the story’s validity.

Fact Check: The viral claim is entirely satirical

In reality, the report is completely false. There is zero evidence that the president ever asked the Google chief to alter his name.

No official transcripts, public announcements, interviews, or verified social media posts indicate that such a conversation took place, nor is there any record of Pichai turning down such a request.

Had a major tech executive been asked to change his name by a sitting U.S. president, mainstream news agencies would have covered it extensively. However, web searches yield no legitimate news reports supporting the claim.

Instead, the rumor originated from an X profile named ‘Daily Noud’—a parody account inspired by ‘Daily Loud’ that explicitly labels its content as satirical fiction designed for online engagement.

The satirical post was built around a genuine anecdote shared by Trump regarding a conversation he had with Pichai about altering geographic labels on Google Maps, specifically concerning the Atlantic Ocean.

Addressing supporters at a rally in Clemson, Trump recounted, “So we seriously looked at the Atlantic Ocean, and I called Google Maps, who were really great with the lake.”

He continued, “And I spoke to a brilliant guy, Sundar. He heads all of Google. He’s a brilliant guy. Sergey and Sundar, totally brilliant guys,” appearing to reference Google co-founder Sergey Brin as well. “And, you know, they’re still rattled from the Gulf.”

“And I said, Sundar, I’m thinking of the Atlantic Ocean. Can you handle it?” Trump added.

According to Trump, Pichai pushed back against the idea, responding, “No, no, no. This time I’m not doing it. Oceans are different, sir. You know, they cover a lot of… They cover really a lot of countries. Please don’t ask us to do that.”
