A viral social media post falsely alleged that Donald Trump pointed the finger at Canada for meddling in US elections following criticism over his tariff policies.
WASHINGTON, DC: As the fast-approaching midterm elections draw near, a fabricated rumor began making the rounds online, asserting that President Donald Trump had publicly claimed Canada was trying to sway the upcoming vote.
This narrative gained traction against the backdrop of an ongoing trade dispute and tariff war between Washington and Ottawa, prompting a closer look at the validity of the viral reports.
The Claim: Trump alleges Canadian election meddling

The rumor originated from a post on X suggesting that Trump accused Canada of interfering in American elections. The friction supposedly stemmed from Canadian officials pointing out that the proposed tariffs would ultimately drive up expenses for US consumers.
According to the deceptive post, the White House sarcastically labeled this supposed interference as “a brazen attempt to help voters understand what they’re voting for.”
The post rapidly spread across other platforms like Instagram and X, racking up tens of thousands of views. While a portion of users accepted the post at face value, many others expressed doubt regarding its accuracy.
Fact Check: The President never made the statement

Although diplomatic tensions have risen over accusations that Canadian figures are trying to sway public opinion ahead of the midterms, there is zero proof that Trump himself ever leveled this accusation.
Furthermore, no official records indicate that the White House characterized any actions as an effort to educate voters.
A review of official press releases, transcripts, and social media channels shows no trace of such remarks from Trump or his administration. An accusation of this magnitude from a sitting president would undoubtedly have drawn widespread coverage from mainstream news organizations.
Instead, the origin of the post can be traced back to a Facebook profile named ‘NewsThump,’ which explicitly labels its content as satire and parody.
US Embassy points fingers at Canadian influence
The online rumor followed the release of an official fact sheet published by the US embassy on Wednesday, October 21, which criticized the Canadian government for brushing off American concerns regarding foreign influence.

“The Canadian government brushes off concerns about potential interference in US elections, even as its ministers and premiers openly describe plans to influence American politics in official documents and public appearances,” the embassy stated.
The document also highlighted instances of individual Canadian citizens unlawfully casting ballots in US elections, pointing to 11 people who faced charges or convictions for voting between 2012 and 2024. However, the report provided no concrete connection between these individuals and an organized effort by Ottawa to subvert American elections.
“All Canadians should refrain from attempting to participate in or influence US elections in any way,” concluded the statement from the US embassy. “Americans decide America’s elections.”
