Fact Check: Did Naughty Dog announce a 2028 open-world ‘Breaking Bad’ game?

The viral post cited a Variety article as its source and framed the rumor as legitimate gaming news.

WASHINGTON, DC: Social media has been buzzing with a rumor claiming that acclaimed studio ‘Naughty Dog’ is working on an open-world ‘Breaking Bad‘ video game slated for a 2028 release, thrilling fans of both the iconic television show and prestige gaming.

Numerous social media accounts circulated eye-catching posters featuring Walter White and Jesse Pinkman alongside headlines that made the project look like a genuine announcement. Let’s look at the facts behind the viral claim.

Claim: Naughty Dog announced a 2028 open-world ‘Breaking Bad’ game

The speculation kicked off on X (formerly Twitter) after a user handle named Chaos Crave posted that Naughty Dog was developing an open-world adaptation of Breaking Bad, targeting a launch in 2028.

To lend the post an air of authenticity, the creator cited a Variety article as a source, dressing up the speculative rumor as breaking industry news. The post quickly went viral, racking up over 21,000 likes and nearly 1 million views.

The announcement-style post drew a split response from the gaming community. While some enthusiasts were thrilled at the prospect, others debated whether Naughty Dog’s narrative-heavy style would be the right fit for the criminal underworld of Albuquerque.

The rumor likely gained traction because a proper high-budget video game adaptation of Breaking Bad is a longtime dream for many fans. Interest was further piqued earlier in 2026 when past reports surfaced regarding a canceled Breaking Bad VR game by Firesprite, putting the franchise back on gamers’ radars.

Fact Check: The claim is false

The rumor is entirely untrue. While the post from @ChaosCrave made waves with its 2028 release date and Naughty Dog attribution, a closer look at the profile reveals the truth: the account’s biography explicitly labels it as an “Unofficial | Parody | Satirical News Account.”

Furthermore, the viral tweet paired fabricated posters featuring the Naughty Dog logo with a source link that had nothing to do with the claim.

The included link directed readers to a January 2019 article from Variety covering Breaking Bad: Criminal Elements—a modest, free-to-play mobile strategy game developed by Plamee and published by FTX Games.

That mobile title allowed users to construct their own drug empires alongside familiar characters from the show, but it was far from an AAA open-world experience by Naughty Dog. That mobile game was released in 2019 and has since been shut down.

Neither Naughty Dog, parent company Sony/PlayStation, network home AMC, nor series creator Vince Gilligan has released any statements, leaks, or confirmations indicating that a Breaking Bad game is in production.

At present, Naughty Dog’s primary focus is on their upcoming original IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which was officially revealed at The Game Awards in 2024.
