Fact Check: Did Obama say ‘Christian God sent Trump before he could convert US to Islam’?

The fabricated quote reappeared online amid a fresh exchange of hostilities between Donald Trump and his predecessor.

WASHINGTON, DC: A baseless rumor has been making the rounds on social media, falsely alleging that former President Barack Obama confessed to a grand design to dismantle the United States and establish Islam, only to have his plans thwarted by the return of President Donald Trump to the White House. The bizarre claim has generated online anxiety and debate, prompting many users to request official fact-checks.

Claim: Barack Obama allegedly credits God for Donald Trump

The viral post has accumulated nearly 100,000 views on X (@atensnut/X)

The misinformation originated from a post on X featuring a photograph of Obama overlaid with text that read: “My plan was to destroy America and convert you to Islam, and then your Christian God sent Donald Trump to ruin it.”

At the time of writing, the post has nearly 100,000 views. While a segment of users expressed outrage and accepted the quote as genuine, others remained doubtful, with many labeling it an obvious fabrication and demanding verification.

Fact Check: No record of any such statement by Barack Obama

The assertion is entirely false. There is zero evidence that the former president ever made such a statement.

A comprehensive review of public transcripts, official statements, speeches, interviews, and verified social media accounts shows no instance of Obama admitting to any intention of converting America to Islam prior to Trump’s presidency.

Had a former U.S. president made such an extraordinary confession, major domestic and international news networks would have given it prominent coverage, inevitably sparking massive national outrage. Furthermore, keyword searches on Google turned up no legitimate news stories supporting the claim.

Digital archives indicate that this specific rumor has periodically circulated online over the past year before resurfacing recently.

The resurrection of the fake quote coincides with a fresh flare-up in the long-running rivalry between Trump and Obama, after Trump labeled his predecessor a “grossly incompetent President.”

The verbal sparring intensified as Obama criticized Trump’s handling of the Iran nuclear agreement, his stance on upcoming midterm candidates, and recent White House renovations. Obama previously mocked the executive mansion’s updated aesthetic by comparing it to something out of “Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.”

In response, Trump took to Truth Social to slam Obama, accusing him of funneling billions of dollars to Iran and paving the way for the nation to acquire nuclear weapons.

Trump also targeted Obama’s record as a political surrogate, highlighting his failed efforts to secure presidential victories for former Democratic nominees Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris.
