Fact Check: Did Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library donate books to children in Israel?

Certain social media posts alleged that Parton collaborated with PJ Library, an international initiative delivering complimentary books to Jewish youths, including those in Israel.

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE: Following reports of iconic singer Dolly Parton’s passing at the age of 80 in August 2026, many admirers have looked back on her philanthropic endeavors through the Imagination Library.

Established by the country legend to supply free books to youngsters, the organization’s enduring legacy has sparked a rumor online suggesting that the Imagination Library extended its book donations to children in Israel.

Claim: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library donated books to children in Israel

This assertion ignited considerable debate on X (formerly Twitter) regarding whether Dolly Parton had indeed sent books to Israeli youth, intersecting with wider conversations concerning her stance on the region.

The confusion was largely fueled by claims that Parton worked alongside PJ Library, a separate entity that distributes free literature to Jewish children globally, encompassing Israel.

Weighing in on the discourse, one X user posted, “People accusing Dolly of being evil because she MAYBE donated books to some Israeli children?” The user added, “Maybe i’m not woke but if she did, i don’t think helping young children who can’t control where they are born is that big of a deal?? Like I am anti israel 100% but all kids need books.”

Further muddying the waters, a 2023 interview featuring Parton and PJ Library was circulated as purported proof. However, a closer look at the interview reveals that Parton was merely acknowledging how her own Imagination Library had served as an inspiration for Harold Grinspoon and PJ Library.

During the interview, she remarked, “Well, I’m always honored when my Imagination Library inspires others, like Harold Grinspoon and PJ Library. That is so very special to me — especially because the Imagination Library comes from a very personal place for me.”

Extending her congratulations on their organizational milestones, she noted, “First of all, congratulations, PJ Library! I’m thrilled to celebrate milestones with you!” She then pivoted to the monumental achievements of her own initiative, stating, “We were thrilled to celebrate our 100 millionth book in 2018, and here we are just five years later celebrating 200 million books worldwide. Isn’t that amazing?”

Fact Check: No evidence to substantiate the rumor

Ultimately, the claim lacks any factual basis. There is no proof indicating that Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has ever established operations in Israel. Official records on the organization’s platform explicitly state that its services are strictly restricted to the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, and Australia.

When reached for clarification regarding the alleged ties to Israel, Tracy Long—a director at the Dollywood Foundation, which finances the Imagination Library—directed inquiries back to the official website’s roster of active countries.

The mix-up clearly stems from similarities with PJ Library, an endeavor managed by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, a philanthropic Jewish organization. While PJ Library does cater to Jewish children worldwide—operating in Israel through the Hebrew-initiated *Sifriyat Pijama* and its Arabic counterpart, *Maktabat al-Fanoos*—it remains a completely distinct entity.

Even though the founder of PJ Library drew conceptual inspiration from the Imagination Library, the two entities never forged any formal business partnership.

While Parton publicly commended the efforts of PJ Library during the 2023 discussion, she provided no monetary backing to the program. Mark Gold, a representative for PJ Library, clarified the situation via email, stating, “No, there was never a formal partnership between PJ Library and the Imagination Library, nor did Ms. Parton donate books or funds to PJ Library or PJ Library initiatives in Israel.”

Gold further emphasized that while Harold Grinspoon admired the Imagination Library framework, PJ Library was built and launched entirely on its own. He concluded, “PJ Library is funded by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and other partners who contribute directly to the PJ Library program.”
