Fact Check: Did Donald Trump say those struggling in this economy are ‘losers’?

Donald Trump recently acknowledged facing difficulties in effectively communicating his administration’s achievements regarding the national economy.

WASHINGTON, DC: Amid mounting pressure and criticism directed at the Trump administration over persistent inflation and surging gas prices, a viral social media claim emerged alleging that President Donald Trump publicly referred to citizens struggling financially as “losers.” This assertion quickly generated online friction and widespread debate, necessitating a closer look at the facts.

The rumor gained traction through a video clip purporting to show a reporter asking the president, “What do you say to those who are struggling to afford gas, groceries, diesel?”

According to the social media post, Trump responded with, “You’re losers. It’s the greatest. If you’re struggling in this economy, you’re a loser.”

Having accumulated more than half a million views, the clip was shared primarily by critics looking to condemn the administration, leading many viewers to accept the quote as genuine. Meanwhile, other users expressed doubt and called for verification.

Fact Check: The President never made this statement

An investigation reveals that the claim is entirely false. There is no recorded evidence indicating that the president ever stated that individuals facing economic hardship are losers.

While the video captures Trump asserting, “We have the greatest economy in the history of our country,” it contains no audio or visual proof of him insulting struggling Americans.

Even the original poster of the video later walked back the literal interpretation in a subsequent post, clarifying: “There are no quotes around the Trump comment. But listen to his answer. He says this is the greatest economy in the history of the world. Which means, if you can’t thrive in the best economy ever, you’ve gotta be a loser because it’s so easy.”

Had the president actually uttered such remarks, major news networks would have immediately picked up the story. However, comprehensive searches yield no legitimate media reports confirming the quote.

The controversy surfaces as Trump openly concedes that he has faced an uphill battle in conveying the true robustness of the U.S. economy to the public, particularly as voters voice frustrations over high fuel costs ahead of the November midterm elections.

“I’ve done a very bad job of explaining how good the country is doing,” Trump remarked, maintaining his stance that “the country’s doing better than it has ever done.”

Acknowledging the historical trend where the incumbent party often surrenders congressional seats during midterms, Trump rallied his base to action, emphasizing, “We have to turn this around.”
