Fact Check: Did Fetterman defect to GOP after Mamdani and AOC were seen giggling at 9/11 event?

Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez spotted exchanging smiles and laughter at Ground Zero 9/11 commemoration

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: In the wake of widespread criticism directed at Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for sharing a lighthearted moment during the 9/11 memorial at Ground Zero, a baseless rumor quickly spread online alleging that Senator John Fetterman has switched his allegiance to the Republican Party. This fabricated story has generated significant buzz and confusion among social media users.

While many appeared to believe the claim, few questioned its authenticity (America’s Last Line Of Defense/Facebook)

A viral Facebook post claimed that Fetterman had reached his breaking point after watching Mamdani share a laugh with Ocasio-Cortez at the sacred site. The post quoted him as saying, “This is the future of my party? No thanks. I’ve had enough of their plans for communism.”

The social media post linked to an entirely fictional article claiming that Fetterman had delivered a confidential “Democrat Playbook” detailing the party’s hidden agenda to Republican National Committee headquarters in Washington.

According to the fabricated story, the document supposedly outlined plans to “seize all private property,” “outlaw meat,” and “replace the Constitution.” The fake report also claimed Fetterman told RNC officials he could no longer support the “destruction of America” and joked that his signature hoodie was merely a disguise.

Despite the absurdity of the claims, numerous social media users accepted the story at face value without verifying its authenticity.

The Reality: The Claim Originated from a Satirical Source

While Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez did indeed draw public ire for their demeanor during the September 11 25th-anniversary observance, Fetterman never made any such statement, nor has he defected to the GOP.

If a sitting U.S. senator were to switch parties under such dramatic circumstances, major news networks would have covered it extensively.

Furthermore, a closer look at the original post reveals a watermark in the corner identifying ‘The Dunning-Kruger Times,’ a well-known online satirical outlet. The entire narrative was created purely for humor and parody.

The controversy surrounding the two Democrats stems from footage showing them smiling and chatting during the solemn reading of victims’ names at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

As grieving family members wept while reading the names of those lost, the two prominent politicians were captured sharing an upbeat, conversational moment.

The video quickly circulated online, prompting sharp condemnation from conservative politicians and commentators who labeled their conduct disrespectful during a period of national mourning.
