WASHINGTON, DC: A viral rumor recently spread across social media platforms, falsely alleging that War Secretary Pete Hegseth and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a fiery verbal confrontation involving mutual threats of missile and drone attacks.
Because the rumor stoked fears of a potential military standoff between the two global powers, a closer examination of the claim became necessary.
The Rumor: An Alleged War of Words
The narrative began with a post on X showcasing a fictional dialogue between Hegseth and Putin. According to the fake exchange, the War Secretary declared, “Let’s be crystal clear. If a single hostile drone touches American soil, we won’t just hit your bases; we will erase your entire military infrastructure before sunrise.”
The post further claimed that Putin fired back with, “You talk about sunrises while sitting behind two oceans. Our hypersonic missiles don’t wait for morning, and your defense systems can’t even track them.”
Amassing tens of thousands of views, the post caused genuine anxiety among users who mistook the fictional exchange for a real geopolitical threat.
The Reality: Satire Mistaken for News
In truth, the exchange never happened. There is zero evidence, official statement, or public transcript to back up the claim.
An event of this magnitude—involving direct, aggressive threats between a high-ranking US official and the Russian president—would immediately dominate global headlines. However, a Google search reveals no coverage from legitimate news organizations.
Furthermore, the source of the rumor is an X profile that explicitly identifies as a “parody account” and routinely publishes made-up conversations to drive online engagement.
Diplomatic Efforts Underway in Moscow
The spread of this fiction coincided with actual diplomatic activity. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, alongside presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner, recently traveled to Moscow to meet with Putin. The over three-hour discussion was part of a renewed push by the administration to explore paths toward ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, though the talks concluded without an immediate breakthrough.
Opening the discussion, Witkoff told Putin via a translator, “So first of all, President Putin, thank you so much for having us.
