Fact-checking Donald Trump, Jon Husted at Ohio rally on economy, Sherrod Brown’s record – PolitiFact

President Donald Trump recently held a 90-minute rally in Vandalia, Ohio, rallying his base to support Republican candidates ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

Ohio remains a major battleground for the 2026 cycle. The race features Republican Sen. Jon Husted defending his seat against former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown, alongside a gubernatorial contest between Republican Vivek Ramaswamy and Democrat Amy Acton. During the October 3 event, Ramaswamy introduced 10-year-old Hunter—whose father is currently deployed—to the audience, while Husted brought out his former college football teammate and ex-NFL coach Jon Gruden to secure an endorsement.

In the wake of the speeches, several prominent claims made by Trump and Husted regarding the economy, legislative records, and state statistics were put under the microscope.

Husted Claim: Brown “did some nice things for the people here illegally. He gave them your Social Security money and free healthcare and COVID checks.”

Verdict: False.

Husted’s assertion misrepresents the outcomes of multiple votes cast by Brown during his time in the Senate. These votes often reflect a standard political strategy where one party forces the opposition to vote on contentious amendments simply to use them later in campaign attacks.

For instance, a 2007 vote cited by critics involved non-citizens who transitioned from undocumented status to legal residency; Brown voted against an amendment that would have stripped them of Social Security credits earned prior to legal status, rather than granting benefits to undocumented individuals. Similarly, a 2013 vote against a Republican healthcare amendment did not open up federally subsidized care to undocumented immigrants, as federal law already explicitly bars them from Medicaid, CHIP, and ACA subsidies. Regarding pandemic relief, Brown supported the 2021 American Rescue Plan, which issued $1,400 stimulus checks but strictly required a valid Social Security number to receive them, effectively blocking undocumented individuals from eligibility.

Husted Claim: “You know what happened in Ohio this week, Mr. President? We had the lowest unemployment rate in the history of Ohio.”

Verdict: Accurate.

State data confirms this milestone. Ohio’s August unemployment rate hit 3.3%, dipping just below the previous record low of 3.4% set back in May 2023.

Trump Claim: “Jon Husted introduced the Rate Power Protection Act to stop data centers from raising electricity costs and require them to pay their own way. … Almost every single Democrat in the Senate voted to block it. They didn’t want it only because we wanted it, probably because I wanted it.”

Verdict: Needs Context.

While Senate Democrats largely opposed the Husted-backed legislation—preventing it from reaching the 60-vote threshold, though it had previously passed the House—Trump’s characterization of the bill’s enforcement is overstated. The legislation did not mandate that tech companies cover the extra grid costs generated by data centers; the provisions were entirely optional. Senate Democrats pointed to this lack of enforcement teeth as their reason for voting against it, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer calling the bill a “fraud” due to its optional nature.

Trump Claim: “Ohio lost 300,000 manufacturing jobs during Brown’s watch.”

Verdict: Lacks Full Context.

This statistic requires looking back to 1993, the start of Brown’s extensive career in federal office, which includes both the House and the Senate. While Ohio did shed over 100,000 manufacturing jobs during his Senate tenure (2007–2025), reaching the 300,000 figure requires factoring in the massive nationwide decline in manufacturing driven by global competition during his earlier years in the House. Throughout his career, Brown has consistently positioned himself as a critic of traditional free-trade agreements.

Trump Claim: “We have almost no inflation.”

Verdict: Misleading.

Economic metrics do not support this statement. Year-over-year inflation stood at 3% as Trump began his second term and ticked up to 3.4% by August, figures that sit well above zero and surpass the Federal Reserve’s established 2% annual target.

Trump Claim: Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico has “been a vegan all his life.”

Verdict: False.

This claim stems from a 2022 speech where Talarico argued that reducing meat consumption helps combat climate change, but he never claimed to follow a vegan diet. Talarico has since refuted the label directly, publishing various social media posts and videos of himself consuming meat.
