What You Need to Know
In mid-September 2026, a rumor gained traction across social media—including a widely shared Facebook post on September 19—claiming that a new “Trump Fuel” station had opened in Branson, Missouri, featuring eye-popping fuel prices.
This story circulated during a time of globally elevated fuel prices driven by the ongoing U.S. conflict with Iran, and it seemingly played off real-world discussions surrounding “Freedom Fuel” initiatives previously associated with the Trump administration. Because of the high-stakes economic climate, many social media users mistook the claim for real news and reached out to fact-checkers to verify its authenticity.
The Investigation
To determine whether the claim held any truth, we conducted searches across major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and DuckDuckGo. If a physical gas station were genuinely charging nearly $20 a gallon, local journalists and major news networks would have extensively covered the story. However, no credible news reports existed regarding the opening of such a station in Branson.
Origin of the Rumor
The narrative originated from a Facebook page named Branson Area Breaking News, which explicitly states in its bio that it is a satirical and humorous news organization. The page first published the piece about the fictional “Trump Fuel” station on September 18.
This page is well-known for producing outlandish, fictional local headlines. In the past, it has spawned viral hoaxes involving fabricated stories and media, such as a flooded Branson street overrun by alligators and the city’s water tower supposedly collapsing.
