Is video of monkey rescuing dog from floodwaters in Thailand real?

Claim:

A video authentically shows a monkey rescuing a dog from floodwaters.

A widely shared clip appearing to show an intelligent monkey pulling a dog to safety amidst rising floodwaters made the rounds across social media platforms in late September and early October 2026.

The 10-second footage portrays a rainy village setting where a monkey wades through water and guides a dog onto a floating log.

For instance, an X post (archived) presented the video alongside a Thai caption translated as, “If we’re gonna make it, we’ve gotta make it together, right?” Published on Sept. 27, the clip circulated concurrently with reports from Thai officials regarding fatalities caused by severe flooding following exceptional rainfall. (The same account shared additional, seemingly genuine footage purportedly depicting snakes, dogs, puppies, and a cow caught in flood zones.)

That particular X post garnered millions of views, mirroring an Instagram publication (archived) featuring the video with the overlay text, “Viral: Monkey Grabs A Dog And Climbs Onto A Floating Log Amid Raging Floodwaters.” The video was similarly distributed across Facebook (archived), TikTok (archived), and X (archived), with some users asserting that an eyewitness filmed the event in Thailand.

Reactions were mixed; while numerous viewers commended the animal’s compassionate behavior, others expressed skepticism, suspecting the clip was generated by artificial intelligence.

Ultimately, the video is fraudulent, exhibiting clear markers of artificial generation, including a precise 10-second runtime, synthetic audio elements, and visual anomalies.

Furthermore, reverse image searches tracking individual frames traced the earliest known upload (archived) to a Thai-language Facebook page named เรื่องร้อนสตอรี่ (translated as Hot Story). That specific post, along with others on the page, carried an “AI content” label.

An inquiry was sent to the administrators of the Facebook page to determine whether they produced the video using AI tools or redistributed content from another source, and updates will be provided should a response arrive.

Analyzing the Footage

At first glance, the video displays fluid camera movements and realistic depictions of rainfall striking the water in a flooded village. The opening frames include subtle framing reminiscent of a vantage point behind a windowpane or a vehicle’s windshield, enhancing its initial illusion of authenticity.

However, evidence of digital fabrication quickly overshadows these realistic elements. An analysis using Adobe Premiere software confirmed the exact length of the downloaded clip. Operating at 24 frames per second, the video spans precisely 10 seconds with zero additional frames—a characteristic trait of AI-generated video clips. No extended versions exist to suggest an authentic recording was simply edited down to this exact duration.

The audio incorporates the ambient sound of rain, followed by incongruous audio effects of the dog landing on the log and issuing whimpers that fail to sync with the visual actions. Additionally, as the dog drops, its front right paw rests on a stationary pile of debris that remains completely motionless. (Because sound effects can easily be added to genuine video footage, mismatched audio alone does not invalidate a video’s visual integrity.)

One of the most definitive signs of artificial manipulation occurs in the animals’ interactions right before the monkey lets go of the dog. Between the 5-second and 6-second marks, as the monkey positions the dog on the log, a visual glitch occurs around the 00:05:13 mark. For a single frame, the dog’s front right leg suddenly transforms into a thinner, sharper vertical shape (highlighted as the dark vertical shape in the center of the yellow circle below) before vanishing entirely in the subsequent frame:

Additional graphical anomalies appear after the camera zooms in on the pair. For instance, a small, light-blue object resembling a hair tie materializes near the left side of the debris pile just after the 7-second mark, having been absent in earlier frames.

AI Detection Software and Fabricated Animal Rescues

Running the clip through various artificial intelligence detection platforms yielded mixed conclusions. The tested programs included Hive’s AI-generated & deepfake content detection, Nvidia’s synthetic video detector, Pangram’s AI image detector (utilizing screenshots), Tencent’s Zhuque AI image and video detector, and ZeroGPT’s AI video detector.

Because automated detection tools vary in reliability, judgments regarding media authenticity rely on a comprehensive review of multiple data points rather than software verdicts alone.

During the investigation, several similar videos depicting animals saving other animals (or humans) from bodies of water were identified. Those particular clips typically displayed far more conspicuous AI indicators, such as excessive smoothness and erratic blurring, which were less pronounced in the monkey-and-dog video.

Investigators also explored whether the event might have been intentionally staged, mirroring known instances of fabricated animal rescue content found online. Kerry Burton-Galley, a representative for Lady Freethinker—an advocacy group dedicated to ending animal cruelty—noted via email that while staged rescues usually involve humans orchestrating distress scenarios for animals, multi-animal rescue scenarios are increasingly appearing.

AI-generated animal content is becoming increasingly troubling and will likely pose an even greater challenge as the technology advances. While no real animal is directly harmed in creating a fully AI-generated video, realistic fake rescue content can make it increasingly difficult for people to distinguish genuine rescues from fabricated ones. That can erode public trust and potentially affect donations and support for legitimate rescue organizations doing lifesaving work.

For further context on manipulated animal media, past investigations have addressed viral material showing an elephant tossing grass onto its head.
