Trump didn’t accuse Ukraine of election interference after strikes on Russian ‘bot farms,’ despite claims

Claim:

U.S. President Donald Trump blamed Ukraine for interfering in the midterm elections following Ukrainian strikes on Russian “bot farms” in October 2026.

Rating:

Originated as Satire

A rumor (archived) began circulating in October claiming that U.S. President Donald Trump accused Ukraine of meddling in the midterms after operations targeted Russian bot networks.

The claim gained traction on October 14 when a Facebook user shared a satirical piece from The Betoota Advocate headlined, “Trump Accuses Ukraine Of Midterm Election Interference After Russian Bot Farm Strikes.”

The narrative also spread across X (archived), with several users mistaking the publication for a traditional hard-news outlet.

This online chatter coincided with unverified reports suggesting that Ukrainian attacks on servers belonging to the Russian tech giant Yandex had led to a drop in right-wing and MAGA social media engagement. Between October 7 and 11, Ukrainian forces targeted Yandex infrastructure located in Sasovo, Kaluga (archived), and Vladimir, with recovery efforts extending past October 15.

The specific premise that Trump viewed these military strikes as an attack on Republican-leaning online bots originated entirely with The Betoota Advocate (archived). The outlet jokingly bills itself as “Australia’s oldest newspaper”—originating from Betoota, an uninhabited ghost town in Queensland.

Although the platform doesn’t feature an explicit comedy disclaimer, numerous media analyses and reports—along with instances where major organizations have been duped—firmly categorize the site as satire.

Because the narrative detached itself from the original publication and traveled across social media without contextual disclaimers or watermarks, it effectively functioned as a piece of misinformation that originated as satire.

The Betoota Advocate published the piece on October 14, alleging that Trump made remarks to reporters aboard Air Force One claiming Ukraine was trying to sway the midterms by dismantling Russian infrastructure.

Official schedules show no record of Trump speaking to the press on Air Force One that day. While Trump did take questions from reporters in Bullhead City, Arizona, on October 14, he made no mention of Russia, Ukraine, or the Yandex server attacks.

Cross-checks across DuckDuckGo, Google, and Yahoo yielded zero matches for the attributed quotes (archived, archived, archived). Had a former U.S. president made such an explosive claim, mainstream newswires like Reuters or The Associated Press would have immediately covered it.

Ultimately, no legitimate news organizations verified the assertions made in the satirical post.

The Betoota Advocate piece also jested that online discussions surrounding Germany’s far-right Alternative für Deutschland party had dropped following the attacks. Previous reporting showed that claim was similarly unfounded, likely born out of a misinterpreted chart posted by a European Parliament member.

For further reading, similar satirical stories by the same outlet involving figures like Tom Hanks or Amy Schumer have previously been reviewed.

Since the effectiveness of satire remains subjective, ratings like “originated as satire” or “labeled satire” are assigned according to how the content was initially framed by its creators.
