What’s the Truth?

Following reports in August 2026 that U.S. President Donald Trump intended to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” social media platforms like Facebook and Threads were flooded with a graphic purporting to show a genuine Truth Social announcement from the president.

The fake post claimed Trump was bypassing Canadian waterways to construct a massive new route named after his wife:

“The FAKE NEWS is saying we need the Canadian canals that connect to LAKE AMERICA. Total lie! We don’t need their small, low-energy Welland Canal! America built the Panama Canal, we built the Suez Canal — incredible, beautiful, high-IQ canals! I have officially instructed the Army Corps of Engineers to build a much BIGGER, DEEPER, WIDER, and far more powerful canal bypass connecting straight into Lake America! It is going to be magnificent! And we are naming it after my stunning, beautiful wife: THE MELANIA CANAL. Every American will be able to EASILY enter the Melania Canal from BOTH the front end and the back side for a very minimal fee! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

Because some users mistook the claim for reality, inquiries poured in asking whether the statement was genuine.

The Origin of the Post

A closer examination of the viral image reveals clear markers indicating it is a joke. Specifically, the post features a “satire” watermark and replaces the standard “Likes” metric with “disLikes.” Furthermore, the author altered Trump’s social media handle to read @realDotardTurmp and misspelled his surname as “Turmp.”

The image originated from a Facebook account named Mrs. Putin, which explicitly labels itself as a “Satire/Parody” page in its bio. The post was originally published there on August 29. The creator is well-known for generating satirical content featuring subtle misspellings and altered UI elements to poke fun at political figures.

No Official Announcement

A review of Trump’s official social media archives using database tools like Trump’s Truth and Factbase confirms that the president never made any statements regarding the construction of a “Melania Canal.” (He did, however, publish a genuine post on September 2 suggesting that the Strait of Hormuz be renamed the “Trump Strait”).

While the naming of “Lake America” has sparked various internet rumors—many of which have been thoroughly debunked—the plans for a presidential canal are entirely fictional.
