In late August 2026, social media users widely shared footage purported to show a kindergarten instructor explaining that she had been fired for helping her pupils explore their gender identity.

The footage gained traction (archived) on X alongside the headline “Kindergarten Teacher’s Gender Lesson Video Prompts Firing Debate.” Under the trending topic, a widely viewed post (archived) from August 28 combined an earlier segment with the newer video in question.

The preliminary segment (archived), titled “Helping My Students Discover Their Genders,” features the purported teacher stating she asked her classroom, “Who wishes that she were born a different gender?” She claims that half the children raised their hands, prompting her to instruct the remaining kids to sit in a corner. The initial post’s description notably included the phrase, “Might be parody.”

The subsequent video (archived), layered on top in the later post, carried a similar caption with the addition of “Update (I Was Fired).” In this recording, the supposed educator appears tearful while stating, “I got fired. This is like the worst day of my life. I lost my teaching license, so now these children will never be able to discover their true selves.”

The alleged firing video was similarly circulated across Facebook (archived), Instagram (archived), X (archived), and YouTube (archived).

Inquiries from readers prompted an investigation, starting with reverse image searches of both recordings. These searches traced the original source to a TikTok profile belonging to a creator named phoebe! (@bhoepe). Her account biography—featuring the question “do i appear to be joking?”—served as an indicator that the content was satirical and parodic.

Ultimately, the footage began as a piece of satire.

The creator of the videos, who requested to be referenced simply as Phoebe, published the initial video (archived) on August 21 accompanied by the hashtags #skit and #satire. Her caption humorously added, “next step is reassignment surgery in the nurse’s office.”

The second video (archived), published on August 28, amassed over 15 million views and likewise included the #skit and #satire tags. Despite this, many users left comments indicating they believed the narrative was entirely authentic, with some of those reactions accumulating hundreds of thousands of likes.

Phoebe confirmed that the clips were purely scripted performances. She clarified that she is not a teacher and has “never worked in a school in any capacity.” Additional content on her TikTok channel includes fictional skits where she claims to keep cat litter boxes in her classroom (nodding to a previously debunked rumor), lost her position as a school nurse, and got into a fight with a funeral procession—all of which were entirely fabricated jokes.

“None of my skits are based on real events and are exaggerated for comedic purposes,” she explained. “Humor has always been a huge aspect of my personality, and even as a kid I wanted to be a comedian.” She went on to state:

I made the video as sort of an experiment; I intentionally told a bizarre story. I made the whole thing up. I also put “skit” and “satire” in the caption of the video. I wanted to see if the majority of viewers would go through the trouble of reading the caption or looking at the other satire/skit videos on my account, and, astoundingly, most people seemed to just take everything I said at face value.

There were also quite a few larger creators who clipped my video and covered it and intentionally hid the “satire” disclaimer, presumably to get more engagement. I think context matters, but even with context some people still believe it! It’s as if I could tell them to their face that it was a joke and it wouldn’t change their mind.

So, the overall reaction to my video is honestly very concerning, especially with AI advancing and the internet being full of widespread misinformation. I feel I did my due diligence by labeling it as satire, and I think ultimately anything can be clipped and taken out of context by people with ulterior motives, particularly if it fits their agenda.
