Three people were found dead following a suspected house explosion and fire late Sunday night in Madison County, Illinois, authorities confirmed.

Emergency crews responded to the 8000 block of West Kirsch Road near the city of Troy after reports of a house fire accompanied by explosions. When firefighters arrived, the residence was already heavily engulfed in flames.

Officials later confirmed that three victims were discovered inside the home after the fire was brought under control.

Firefighters Respond to Late-Night Explosion

According to the Troy Fire Department, the emergency call came in around 11:14–11:18 p.m. Sunday reporting a structure fire with explosions.

Fire crews arriving at the scene found that nearly 80% of the house was already burning, making rescue and firefighting efforts extremely difficult.

Authorities said:

  • Three people were found dead inside the residence.
  • One person was transported to a hospital in St. Louis with serious burn injuries.
  • Several other residents managed to escape the home without injuries.

Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims.

Because of the explosions reported at the scene, a large number of local, state, and federal agencies responded to assist with the investigation.

Authorities confirmed the involvement of:

  • Madison County Sheriff’s Office
  • Madison County Coroner
  • Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office
  • Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF)

Officials secured the area while specialists examined the property for possible explosive materials or other hazards.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the blast.

No Threat to the Public, Officials Say

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office said investigators do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.

However, officials continue to examine the scene and gather evidence to determine what led to the deadly explosion.

The investigation remains active and authorities say additional updates will be released once more information becomes available.

Investigation Ongoing

Officials are working to determine whether the explosion was caused by:

  • a gas leak
  • a structural fire
  • hazardous materials
  • or another factor

The Madison County Coroner’s Office is also conducting examinations to confirm the identities of the victims and the causes of death.

Authorities have asked anyone with information about the incident to contact local law enforcement.
