Alleged image of graffiti beneath ‘Department of War’ sign isn’t what it seems

An image circulating in June 2026, purportedly showing graffiti reading “0-1” beneath a “Department of War” sign, has been identified as originating as satire. The image appeared on X, with some users interpreting it as a genuine commentary on President Donald Trump’s dealings with Iran.

However, investigations revealed that the image originated from the X account @TheRealThelmaJ1. While the account did not explicitly identify as parody, its description stated, “My son says I’m a parody.”

A reverse image search yielded no credible news reports or additional versions of the image, which would be expected for an authentic event. Furthermore, visual comparisons with actual “Department of War” signs at the Department of Defense showed discrepancies in the texture and appearance of the sign’s supporting pillar compared to the image in question.

It remains unclear whether the image was created using photo editing software or generative artificial intelligence. Attempts to contact the original poster were unsuccessful, as their direct messages were closed. This case follows a pattern of previously fact-checked images, including AI-generated content falsely attributed to public figures.

The rating system acknowledges that the effectiveness of satire is subjective. Therefore, images are classified as “originated as satire” or “labeled satire” based on the creator’s description of their work, leaving the final interpretation to the audience.
