A proposal to honor former President Barack Obama with an honorary street designation outside Trump Tower in Chicago has sparked discussion online. The idea, which gained significant attention after appearing in a viral X post, suggests renaming a portion of North Wabash Avenue to “Barack Hussein Obama Way.”
This proposal originated from a petition that garnered over 28,000 signatures, calling for Chicago officials to recognize Obama’s legacy in his hometown. The timing of the proposal coincided with the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park.
Chicago Alderman Brendan Reilly is credited with introducing the measure. Supporters view it as a symbolic gesture celebrating Obama’s contributions and potentially distancing the city from the current administration. Reilly has previously supported efforts to remove Donald Trump’s honorary street designation.
However, the proposal is not a done deal. It is currently under review by the Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety. If approved, it would only be an honorary designation and would not alter the official street name or Trump Tower’s mailing address. Reports suggest Reilly, a Democrat, introduced the proposal independently, and it has not been officially adopted by any broader Democratic group.
