Fact Check: Did Bernie Sanders say his 35 years in Congress will end if SAVE Act is passed?

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has criticized the Trump-backed legislation, cautioning that it risks “disenfranchising” the American electorate.

WASHINGTON, DC: Amid ongoing discussions surrounding Donald Trump’s contentious SAVE America Act, a fabricated rumor began spreading across social media alleging that independent Senator Bernie Sanders stated his congressional career would come to a close if the bill passes. The false assertion quickly drew mockery and online criticism, prompting a thorough review of the facts.

Claim: Bernie Sanders declared his time in Congress will end if the SAVE Act is enacted

A viral post featured an artificial intelligence-generated video of Sanders delivering the fabricated quote (@TrumpsHurricane/X)

According to a widely shared post on X, Sanders supposedly stated, “My 35 years in Congress will come to an end if the Save America Act is passed.”

The post featured an AI-manipulated video of the senator appearing to make the remarks, which quickly amassed tens of thousands of views.

Although the footage was visibly synthetic, many social media users accepted the statement as genuine, while others questioned its authenticity and called for verification.

Fact Check: The statement attributed to Sanders is completely false

While the progressive lawmaker has openly opposed the controversial legislation, no record exists of him ever claiming that his tenure in Congress would terminate upon the bill’s passage. Consequently, the claim has been rated false.

Neither Sanders nor his congressional office has issued any public statements, announcements, or remarks containing such sentiments.

Furthermore, the rumor originated from a conservative-leaning X profile known for sharing unverified and satirical content.

Given the high-profile nature of the legislation, major news organizations would have immediately covered such a remarkable declaration by a senior senator; however, mainstream media reports supporting the claim are entirely nonexistent.

An independent review by Grok similarly concluded, “No primary evidence confirms Bernie Sanders stated the SAVE America Act would end his 35 years in Congress. The assertion circulated on social media channels without supporting transcripts, authentic video footage, or official documentation.”

Earlier this year in March, Sanders voiced strong opposition to the Republican-backed bill, cautioning that it has the potential to “disenfranchise tens of millions” of citizens if enacted into federal law.

“Trump and his allies are facing political challenges, and their solution is to implement barriers to voting and disenfranchise tens of millions of Americans,” Sanders posted on X.

“As Trump bluntly stated: If the SAVE Act is passed, Republicans will secure electoral victories for half a century. Vote NO.”
