A social media rumor suggested that FBI agents discovered multiple boxes of algae seeds at Antifa headquarters. This claim emerged amid concerns about vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, with speculation linking the issue to President Donald Trump’s repair efforts.
The rumor, circulating on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Reddit, alleged that the FBI found these seeds, accompanied by an image with a CBS News watermark. Online users reacted strongly, pointing fingers at Antifa and leftists for alleged damage to the pool, which includes algae blooms and peeling blue paint. This has reportedly hindered President Trump’s renovation plans for the iconic pool.
However, these claims lack factual basis. Searches on official FBI and CBS News websites did not yield any reports supporting the discovery of algae seeds at an Antifa headquarters. Furthermore, Antifa is not a formally recognized organization with a physical headquarters, making the notion of such a discovery inherently baseless. Credible news organizations have also not reported on such an event.
A satire piece from Grok clarified that no FBI raid found “algae seeds” at any Antifa headquarters. The piece also pointed out that Antifa is a decentralized movement without a central organization or headquarters, and that algae reproduce via spores or cell division, not seeds.
Meanwhile, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is slated for further repair work, occurring just months after a $14 million restoration by the Trump administration. This comes after images surfaced showing algae and peeling paint, which drew significant criticism. President Trump attributed the damage to vandalism, suggesting a chemical was deliberately used to harm the historic site. The pool’s water had turned green due to an algae bloom shortly after the renovation. The cost of the repair work had previously increased by $1.6 million within a month, from an initial estimate of $13.1 million to $14.7 million.
