Recent social media rumors suggested North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had passed away, with unverified claims alleging that China dispatched thousands of troops to Pyongyang to back Kim Ju-ae amid succession concerns.
WASHINGTON, DC: Unfounded online speculation regarding the health of North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un began circulating widely after posts falsely alleged he had suffered a fatal cerebral hemorrhage.
The viral narrative claimed that due to North Korea’s inadequate medical infrastructure, Kim fell into a coma and was covertly moved to China for urgent medical intervention, ultimately passing away abroad. Let’s take a closer look at the facts behind these assertions.
Claim: Kim Jong-un has died
It is rumored that recently,Kim Jong-un, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and Supreme Leader of North Korea, suffered a severe cerebral hemorrhage and fell into a coma. Although a team of medical experts from Peking Union Medical College Hospital was dispatched to North Korea to assist in his treatment, the poor medical conditions in North Korea forced Kim Jong-un to be transferred to Peking Union Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. However, due to the severity of his condition and the fact that the optimal window for treatment had passed, Kim Jong-un succumbed to his injuries and died. His body has been secretly transported back to North Korea, and the news of his death is being kept under wraps.

The speculation gained traction primarily on X (formerly Twitter), where various accounts posted about the alleged demise of the North Korean leader.
One user posted, “Rumors circulate that Kim Jong-un has died, thwarting Kim Ju-ae’s succession plans and potentially plunging North Korea into civil war. The Chinese Communist Party has reportedly dispatched 9,000 troops to Pyongyang to assist Kim Ju-ae in stabilizing her regime.”

The Chinese Communist Party has reportedly dispatched 9,000 troops to Pyongyang to assist Kim Ju-ae in stabilizing her regime. In preparation for a potential civil war in North Korea, the Northern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army has entered a state of high alert (Level III), and all troops within the theater command have been ordered to…Leave, family visits, and demobilization/retirement are suspended; personnel who have left the area are recalled; and strict control over personnel entry and exit is enforced!

The same thread went on to allege that the Northern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army adopted a heightened Level III alert status, halting all troop leaves, family visits, and retirements while enforcing strict border controls.
Concurrently, other accounts shared fabricated screenshots attributed to Donald Trump‘s Truth Social profile.
One fake post read, “I heard rumors that my good friend and dear leader Kim Jong Un has died. I’m looking into it and hoping it’s not true. He taught me a lot about leadership and strength!”

Another satirical or spoof account post also circulated, featuring a nonsensical claim regarding Trump’s supposed reaction to the rumors.
I’m very happy to hear that the rumors of Kim Jong Un’s death are vastly overstated. He is actually gay. The translation from East Korean to American can be confusing because the words are similar.

Fact Check: False, the claim is entirely incorrect
The reports suggesting that Kim Jong-un has passed away are completely untrue.
There is zero credible evidence to back up the social media rumors claiming the North Korean leader suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died in Beijing.
Official North Korean state media outlets, including the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), actively documented Kim’s public engagements throughout October 2026.
According to these official updates, Kim participated in events celebrating the 81st founding anniversary of the Workers’ Party of Korea around October 10, appearing alongside his wife, Ri Sol-ju, and his daughter, Kim Ju-ae.

Furthermore, state releases confirmed he presided over the inspection and official opening of the National Defense Revolution Museum between October 11 and 13.
State-published photographs from the museum—which displays advanced weaponry such as intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs)—showed Kim alongside his family members during the tour.
No verifiable or mainstream news organizations have reported his death. On the contrary, documented public appearances directly contradict the narrative of a medical emergency or passing.
While strict information controls in North Korea frequently spark recurring health-related rumors, the latest claims are entirely baseless, and imagery such as a “1984–2026” memorial graphic circulating online has been identified as fabricated.
