Fact Check: Did UFC Freedom 250 ‘completely destroy’ the grass on the White House Ellipse?

A recent aerial photograph of the White House South Lawn has ignited an online discussion. The image depicts crews dismantling a venue previously set up for UFC Freedom 250, an event held to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary and President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.

Thousands of attendees gathered on the South Lawn and the adjacent Ellipse for the viewing party. The photograph, shared on social media, shows significant wear and tear on the grass of the Ellipse, with large areas appearing brown and bare, interspersed with patches of green. Evidence of heavy foot traffic, event infrastructure, and temporary installations, including tire tracks and cleared sections of land, are visible. Construction vehicles and materials are also scattered across the grounds, with a large temporary arched structure, nicknamed “The Claw,” in the process of being taken down.

While the image accurately portrays the aftermath of a large-scale event on the White House grounds, the description that the grass was “completely destroyed” is an exaggeration. The turf did sustain considerable damage from the event’s activities, including spectator seating, equipment, and the main structure. However, the damage, while significant, was not irreparable. Plans were in place to restore the lawn, involving replacing sod and reseeding damaged areas, with completion anticipated by late June. It’s common practice to repair White House lawns following major public events. Reports indicate that approximately $700,000 was designated for these repairs. Therefore, the damage was evident, but its severity was overstated in some online commentary.
