A viral social media claim suggests that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has prohibited Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from entering city-owned properties. This assertion has generated significant online discussion, particularly in light of ongoing controversies surrounding ICE operations and conduct.
The claim states that Mamdani has enacted a ban on ICE accessing New York City properties. This comes as President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and intensified ICE raids have faced scrutiny, with some incidents, including the deaths of two Minnesota residents earlier this year, being linked to these actions. The claim, which has circulated widely on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), has elicited a range of responses, from support for the alleged measure to criticism labeling it as an immigrant-friendly stance. Skepticism regarding the claim’s veracity has also been expressed.
Upon investigation, the claim is found to be partially accurate. While Mayor Mamdani did not issue a direct “ban,” he did sign an executive order in February concerning the city’s sanctuary laws. This order aims to enhance protections for immigrant New Yorkers and overall public safety. A key provision of this order restricts ICE from entering NYC properties, including schools, shelters, hospitals, and parking lots, unless they possess a judicial warrant. Furthermore, the mayor is establishing a new task force dedicated to ICE and immigration-related matters.
Mayor Mamdani has also publicly advocated for the abolition of ICE. During a recent appearance on MS NOW’s ‘The Weekend,’ he discussed the protests occurring outside the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. Mamdani stated, “This is partially why I have put forward a vision alongside so many others to say that ICE should be abolished, that there is no way to reform this kind of cruelty that we’re seeing endemic in the way that immigration is being enforced across the country.” He further emphasized his support for New York City’s sanctuary city policies, asserting that the city is committed to ensuring all its agencies adhere to these regulations.
