Fact Check: Does the video show Black kids protecting Latino neighbors from ICE officer?

Viral footage falsely claims to show Black children defending Latino residents from an immigration enforcement official.

ALBANY, GEORGIA: A widely shared video across social media networks purported to capture Black youths shielding their Latino neighbors from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. The footage reignited online debates surrounding former President Donald Trump’s strict immigration enforcement strategies. However, due to widespread skepticism regarding the narrative, a thorough fact-check was conducted to determine the truth behind the video.

The video circulated widely on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X, and Bluesky (@sarrah_bellus/X)

The circulating video purportedly showed Black minors stepping in to safeguard their Latino neighbors from an ICE operative.

Originally surfacing in July, the recording features several young Black individuals dousing a man in uniform and tactical gear using water balloons, water guns, and buckets of water.

An initial upload on TikTok claimed that the footage captured “a group of Black children in an apartment complex who told their Latino neighbors to stay inside because ICE was in the complex looking for immigrants.”

The clip quickly went viral across Facebook, Instagram, X, and Bluesky, racking up millions of views.

Public response was deeply divided; while many internet users lauded the youths for their perceived intervention, others criticized them. Meanwhile, a segment of viewers immediately labeled the narrative as fabricated.

The Fact Check: False; the footage actually captures a playful water fight

In reality, the video shows college-aged Black men and women engaging in a water fight at an apartment complex (@TRIGGERHAPPYV1/X)

While the video itself is genuine and bears no signs of artificial intelligence or digital manipulation, the context attached to it is entirely false.

There is no evidence indicating that the individuals in the video were defending anyone from immigration authorities.

Instead, the clip documents a friendly water battle involving college-age Black residents at ‘Rams Edge,’ an off-campus housing complex serving Albany State University, a historically Black institution located in Albany, Georgia.

A search regarding ‘Rams Edge’ led investigators to a post on X by an eyewitness who debunked the narrative, clarifying that the man mistaken for an ICE officer was actually a member of the “off campus housing security” team.

Accompanying his post with alternative angles of what he described as the complex’s ongoing “water wars,” the user criticized the rapid spread of misinformation.

Furthermore, a representative for the US Department of Homeland Security confirmed via email to ‘Snopes’ that “This is not an ICE officer in the video.”

Sylah Ferguson, a spokesperson for the Albany Police Department, also verified over the phone that the man in the video is not a member of the local police force.
