Fact-Check: That 70% of University of Ilesa Staff Are from Ede Remains Unproven

Claims circulating on Facebook allege that a significant majority of staff at the University of Ilesa are from Ede, Osun State. One post specifically asserts that 70% of employees hired in a recent recruitment exercise were from Ede. Another post claims that out of 285 individuals recruited by the university in 2025, 250 were from Ede.

These claims remain unverified.

The posts, originating from Facebook accounts like Timileyin Oyeniyi and Governor Ifedolapo Osun, have generated discussion and concern regarding fairness, regional representation, and potential political influence in the university’s hiring practices. The timing of these allegations, coinciding with the Osun State governorship election in 2026, highlights their potential to shape public opinion.

An investigation into these claims found no supporting evidence in publicly available information, recruitment records, staff databases, or official reports from the University of Ilesa or the Osun State Government. When contacted, Mr. Babatunde Fanowopo, Senior Assistant Registrar of the Corporate Services and Information Unit at the University of Ilesa, stated that appointments and recruitment are strictly based on institutional staffing needs, approved establishment, qualifications, competence, and due process. He emphasized that ethnicity, religion, and political affiliation are not considered in hiring, deeming the claims inaccurate and misleading.

Without verifiable data or official documentation to substantiate the assertions, the claims that 70% of University of Ilesa staff are from Ede, or that 250 out of 285 recruited employees were from Ede, are unproven.
