During an intimate conversation on “Love Island USA,” contestant Mackenzie “Kenzie” Annis presented an explanation of her vision score to her partner, Caleb McDaniel. Annis stated that her 20/30 vision meant she could see things at 30 feet that others needed to be 20 feet away to see. McDaniel, in turn, mentioned his 20/13 vision, referring to it as “fighter pilot vision.”
However, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, 20/20 vision is considered standard. The first number in a vision score indicates the distance from the eye chart, while the second number signifies the distance at which a person with normal vision can see the same line of text.
Annis, who cited her nursing school background for her understanding, has a 20/30 vision score, which actually indicates slightly below-average eyesight. This means she needs to be 20 feet away to see clearly what an average person can see from 30 feet. Conversely, McDaniel’s 20/13 vision is significantly better than average, approximately 30% sharper. This level of visual acuity is comparable to that of professional baseball players.
Annis, a recent nursing graduate, was unavailable for further comment due to her participation in the show’s format, which requires digital disconnection.
The statement made by Annis regarding her 20/30 vision score is inaccurate. She reversed the meaning of the numbers, leading to a misunderstanding of her visual acuity. Her score indicates that she requires a closer viewing distance than someone with average vision.
