A claim that U.S. President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin accurately stated that New Jersey has at least 35,152 noncitizens on its voter rolls has been rated as Mostly False.
While New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill did announce that 6,600 noncitizens were mistakenly added to the state’s voter rolls between June 2023 and June 2024 due to a software error, Trump and Mullin’s figure of over 35,000 was not substantiated.
According to Sherrill’s office, the 6,600 figure originated from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, where the faulty software was implemented. The office stated they were unaware of how the Department of Homeland Security arrived at its much higher number.
Trump and Mullin did not provide evidence to support their claim. The original DHS statement also included a caveat, suggesting “there may be as many as 35,152 non-citizens registered to vote in New Jersey,” indicating uncertainty.
The claim is rated Mostly False because Sherrill acknowledged a smaller number of noncitizens on the rolls, but she also stated that fewer than 400 of those individuals cast ballots. There is no evidence that these errors impacted any election outcomes.
