A widely circulated image, purportedly showing U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in emo fashion for his senior yearbook photo, has been debunked. The image depicted Hegseth with dark clothing, side-swept bangs, and black eyeliner, aligning with the emo subculture.
Hegseth graduated from Forest Lake Area High School in Minnesota in 1999. An examination of the school’s 1999 yearbook, where Hegseth was active in sports and choir, and even nominated for homecoming king, revealed no evidence of the emo style seen in the circulating image. His actual yearbook photos from 1997, 1998, and 1999 show him with a more conventional appearance, including a crew cut.
Further analysis of the purported emo yearbook photo, using OpenAI’s verify tool, detected a SynthID watermark, suggesting the image may have been generated by AI.
