Social media posts circulating during the 2026 Iran war claimed a video showed Americans replacing U.S. flags with black flags to protest Washington’s support for Israel and involvement in the Middle East conflict. However, the video predates the war by several years and is unrelated to current events.
According to AFP Fact Check, the clip was originally posted on TikTok on Aug. 31, 2021. The original uploader said the black American flag was raised as a protest against then-President Joe Biden’s administration, not in response to the 2026 Iran conflict or U.S.-Israel relations.
The misleading claim spread widely on X, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads after Iran’s Tasnim News Agency and other social media accounts falsely connected the video to growing tensions in the Middle East. Posts claimed Americans were displaying black flags to protest alleged Israeli influence over the U.S. government.
Reverse image searches traced the footage back to its original 2021 TikTok upload, confirming it was recycled and taken out of context. AFP found no evidence linking the video to the Iran war or any coordinated anti-war protest movement in 2026.
The black version of the American flag has appeared in different political contexts over the years and does not have one universally accepted meaning. In some cases, black U.S. flags have been used as symbols of political dissatisfaction or protest.
The misinformation spread amid a broader wave of false and misleading content surrounding the 2026 Iran war. Fact-checkers documented numerous examples of recycled videos, AI-generated imagery, and unrelated footage being falsely tied to the conflict.
AFP concluded that the viral posts misrepresented an old video to create the false impression that Americans were staging new protests connected to the Iran war.
Final Verdict: False
