The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall due to an import violation. Specifically, the bacon was imported without the required reinspection into the United States. While the FSIS stated there were no confirmed reports of illness or injury related to the recalled bacon, the recall was necessary because FSIS could not confirm its safety without inspection.
The affected products were distributed to Grocery Outlet distributors and retailers. Two specific types of bacon were identified:
* 12-oz vacuum packages of “Royale Natural Applewood Smoked ALL NATURAL Uncured Bacon Product of Canada” with sell-by dates of September 1, 2026, and September 7, 2026.
* 12-oz vacuum packages of “TOP VALU Uncured Hardwood Smoked Bacon PRODUCT OF CANADA” with various sell-by dates between September 1, 2026, and September 7, 2026.
Maple Leaf Foods clarified that the recall was primarily due to a paperwork issue at the border and that the product itself was not expected to cause illness, emphasizing that consumer safety remains a priority.
Federal law mandates that all imported meat, poultry, and egg products undergo inspection before entering U.S. commerce. This process ensures that imported products meet U.S. safety standards. Products that bypass this inspection are subject to recall.
