A newlywed nurse from Texas is showing encouraging signs of recovery after a sudden and life-threatening medical emergency disrupted her honeymoon in Japan.
Sarah Danh, 27, had traveled to Japan with her husband, Luke Gradl, shortly after their wedding. However, just two days into the trip, she developed severe symptoms and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with acute liver failure and other serious complications.
Her condition deteriorated rapidly, leaving her in a coma and dependent on life support. Due to the severity of her illness, she required intensive treatments, including dialysis and continuous monitoring, while doctors worked to stabilize her.
After several days in critical condition overseas, Danh was transported back to Texas on April 21 through an emergency medical evacuation, allowing her to continue treatment closer to home.
In the days following her return, her family began to see small but meaningful improvements. She showed signs of awareness, such as responding to loved ones by squeezing a hand or nodding slightly, raising hopes that she was emerging from the coma.
By the end of April, her condition had improved further. She was taken off life support and was able to breathe independently. Family members reported that she could move her arms and legs and had even taken a few assisted steps.
Despite this progress, her recovery remains incomplete. She still has limited speech and motor control, struggles with memory, and requires assistance with basic functions. Doctors continue to evaluate the cause of her sudden illness, which has not yet been determined.
Her family has emphasized that while the improvement is significant, the road ahead will involve extensive physical and cognitive rehabilitation.
